Grammys 2018 nominations announced

By Tribute on November 30, 2017 | Leave a Comment

Jay-ZThis year’s Grammy nominees have been announced, and with such a great year in music it’ll be hard to say for sure who will win in many of the categories.

This year marks a big change in the way the Grammys are doing things. For the first time ever, voting members were able to cast their votes online. This choice brought the Grammys up to speed technically but also allowed more of the 13,000 members have their voices heard.

The old system was done by mail and if the member was away touring or recording away from their listed address they missed their chance. The online system also allowed voters to listen to content from each of the entries while voting when they would have had to seek out each piece on their own leaving many to vote for content they were already familiar with or names they recognized.

This new access has already had a huge impact on the nominees list for this year’s awards. It is the first time ever a Spanish language album has been up for Record of the Year with “Despacito” making the cut. An even more impressive statistic is all of the top nominees are people of color, and for the first time ever a white artist isn’t even nominated for Record of the Year.

The most nominated artist for 2018 is Jay-Z with eight, Kendrick Lamar takes second spot with seven nominations, Bruno Mars has six and Childish Gambino, Khalid, No I.D. and SZA have five nominations each. It will be interesting to see how those numbers break down when the winners are announced on January 28, 2018.

It should be noted that 2017 for the Grammys is October 1st 2016 to September 30th 2017 so some of the more recent chart toppers, like P!nk’s “Beautiful Trauma”, Niall Horan’s “Flicker” and of course Taylor Swift’s chart leading “Reputation” didn’t make the cut, although some of their singles may have.

Check out all the categories and nominees below. Let us know who your picks are in the comments! ~ Hayley Michaud
