Tribute was invited to spend a few hours on the set of the upcoming film Hacker, which was filmed in Toronto, New York, Thailand and Hong Kong. Directed by Akan Satayev, the film is based on real events. Alex Danyliuk, a young immigrant played by Callan McAuliffe, gets involved with a cyber criminal organization called DarkWeb. He tries to earn easy money to help his parents, who are suffering from financial trouble and risk losing their home. Alex quickly moves up the ranks of DarkWeb and partners with a streetwise haggler, Sye, and another hacker named Kira, played by Lorraine Nicholson (Jack Nicholson’s daughter). His operations bring in more money, but also causes other members of DarkWeb to turn against him out of jealousy. Despite this, Alex is on the path to becoming a member of the inner circle.
The set was located in an old, run-down building near the waterfront. It had an intimidating jail cell, a courtroom and an interrogation room. On set, we saw director Akan Satayev and his crew shooting an intense jail house scene that is crucial to the film’s plot. We also had the chance to interview lead actor Callan McAuliffe and his onscreen love interest, Lorraine Nicholson. It was interesting to watch how the same scene was shot again and again until it was perfect. Callan seemed laid back and gave his full attention to the scenes being shot, while Lorraine was thrilled to be shooting in Toronto despite the icy cold weather.
