Still from Crazy Rich AsiansCrazy Rich Asians, the popular book series turned successful film adaptation is now being developed into a stage show, aiming for Broadway. This musical stage adaptation has Jon M. Chu set to direct it, the same person who directed the film adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians and the upcoming two-part film adaptation of Wicked (2024). The book (script) for the musical has been written by Leah Nanko Winkler, with music by Helen Park and lyrics by Amanda Green and Tat Tong.

Like the original novel by Kevin Kwan and the subsequent hit film, the stage musical will focus on a Chinese American woman named Rachel, whose boyfriend Nick wants her to travel to Singapore with him to meet his family. Once there, she discovers that they are “crazy rich.” A movie sequel is also in development, based on the follow-up novel China Rich Girlfriend.

The musical production is aiming for The Great White Way, but there will first be a pre-Broadway engagement, with more details and dates to be announced soon. ~Mackenzie Heidrick
