Hollywood applauds Ellen Page for coming out

Juno star Ellen Page came out last Friday at the Time To Thrive Conference, and the outpouring of support from other celebrities marks another win for the LGBT community in Hollywood. In a heartfelt speech, the 26-year-old actress opened up about her sexuality: “I’m here today because I am gay, and because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.” She also spoke about her struggle to keep her identity a secret: “I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I’m standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that.”

Following the LGBT youth event in Las Vegas, many celebrities expressed their love and support for the Canadian actress on Twitter. Kristen Bell said: “Rivited by @EllenPage’s fabulous speech. So honest & funny & articulate. She shines. Happy Valentines Day to ALL.” Openly gay duo Tegan and Sara also congratulated Ellen on coming out, saying: “Never underestimate the courage it takes to be yourself. Giant hugs to @EllenPage.” Other gay celebrities also gave a shout out to the 26-year-old star, including Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson and former teen heartthrob Lance Bass. ~Yara Matar

I think everyone already realized she was gay. She’s so boyish.
