Hong Kong 3D comedy sinks Avatar

James Cameron’s 2009 scif-fi, box-office blockbuster Avatar no longer holds the biggest first day opening for a film in Hong Kong. A 3D adult comedy titled 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, a remake of the 1991 Hong Kong film of the same name, beat Cameron’s film, taking in a record $360,000 on its opening day. Cameron’s Avatar previously held the territory’s first-day box office record with $340,000. As of Tuesday, the film, which tells the moral tale of an ancient scholar, has earned $2.2 million in its home market, making it the Hong Kong box office champion. Though the film had a successful opening with some global success, earning $75 million in Taiwan and $870,000 in Australia, it has a way to go before overthrowing the reigning Avatar in total box office revenue in Hong Kong. Sex and Zen will be released in South Korea on May 12, and in France, Italy and India in June. ~Natasha Tsakiris
