James Cameron’s 2009 scif-fi, box-office blockbuster Avatar no longer holds the biggest first day opening for a film in Hong Kong. A 3D adult comedy titled 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, a remake of the 1991 Hong Kong film of the same name, beat Cameron’s film, taking in a record $360,000 on its opening day. Cameron’s Avatar previously held the territory’s first-day box office record with $340,000. As of Tuesday, the film, which tells the moral tale of an ancient scholar, has earned $2.2 million in its home market, making it the Hong Kong box office champion. Though the film had a successful opening with some global success, earning $75 million in Taiwan and $870,000 in Australia, it has a way to go before overthrowing the reigning Avatar in total box office revenue in Hong Kong.
