Hugh Jackman: Will “sexy” status cost him Oscar?

hugh_jackman.jpgHugh Jackman, who stars in the upcoming feature film Australia opposite Nicole Kidman, has been named “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine. But the Los Angeles Times has published an article saying it may cost the Australian actor an Oscar nod. The article, by Tom O’Neill, states that “older male academy members have a long-standing tradition of slapping the stud” when it comes to handing out Oscars, citing other sexy, good looking leading men who’ve never won an acting Oscar, such as Tom Cruise, Robert Redford, Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Will Smith and Brad Pitt. Other actors who’ve been named “Sexiest Men Alive” by People magazine in previous years include Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Pierce Brosnan, Richard Gere, Mel Gibson and Patrick Swayze, to name a few.

i think he’s quite underrated. i think he’s a better actor than people give him credit for. he’s so versatile. he can sing, he can dance, he can make you laugh and make you cry…what else must a man do! 🙂

    cannot wait for Australia!!

I don’t think Jackman is particularly good looking. Give me a real man like…..oh, Clive Owen or Benicio DelToro. mmmmm…….yummm. Now there’s two of the sexiest men alive!!!!

I doubt that this title would effect whether he is given the nod. Of all the examples listed how many of them actually deserved it. Besides the Oscars though sometimes do give the honour to those deserving (last years Best Actress Winner), but they sometimes are make-ups for past years, for example, I didn’t think that Sean Penn deserved the Oscar for Mystic River, but I think he should have gotten it for Dead Man Walking and I am Sam.

I agree, Romney, on the bulk of your comments, but however disagree on Sean Penn being undeserving of the Oscar for Mystic River, yet totally agree on Dead Man Walking, he was outstanding there. Mind you, I thought Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon were deserving as well for Mystic River – such a hauntingly brilliant movie.

For the record, I think Jackman is extremely handsome, a good actor and will make a personal assessment of Oscar worthiness after seeing the film.

I don’t think his looks will have any effect on this decision at all, not a bit.

    Uh, dude…get informed.
Robert Redford did win an Oscar for Best Director for his movie “Ordinary People” and so did Mel Gibson…in fact, Mel won 2 Oscars…for Best Picture and Best Director in 1996’s Braveheart movie…

They won as directors, not as actors. The article specifically states it’s about good-looking men “whove never won an acting Oscar”

Not to sound gay or anything, but I think James Franco should at least be nominated for ‘sexiest’. I never heard women swoon over him.. maybe he needs to be more of a lead role.

I was shocked to see how much weight Jackman dropped in ‘The Fountain’. He must’ve lost 50lbs of lean body mass since X-Men. Would not have won ‘sexiest’ that year.
