Hundreds turned away at New Moon auditions

twilightlogo.jpgHundreds of First Nations teenagers from all over North America turned up at a casting call for New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, but many were turned away. Some had flown in from as far away as Florida. The lines began forming at 5 a.m. at Second Avenue Studios in Vancouver but at 12:30, casting assistants told the crowd that no more hopefuls would be allowed in to audition. With hundreds still left outside, some gave way to tears, while others grew angry, accusing people of cutting in line. The lucky few who made it in the studios were given an audition appointment and a few pages of the script to prepare. A casting assistant for Vancouver’s Aikins/Cossey Casting told the Vancouver Sun, “This is more than we expected. It’s definitely a good turnout.”

I just hope they cast “native” people for the Quileutes roles… I’m tired of seeing other nationalities taken our parts…

  2. Nancy • February 10, 2009 @ 5:34 PM

First of all, I absolutely DO NOT agree with the statement above! ▲ I don’t see people as a “colour”. To me, we are all the same as long as ‘OUR’ blood runs red!

Secondly, I think when you call for auditions, you should audition ALL who show up. You go to the end of the line and you end it there. Anyone who shows up AFTER the end of the line has been set, is outta luck but, you don’t call it quits when the people have been lined up there all day!! Jeeze, for all they know, their “star” could be at the end of the line!

  3. Myself • February 10, 2009 @ 10:29 PM

Well I can see that you are not a native person, or else you would understand, and which goes for any other “color” as you like to say… If the role is meant for a native person… then a native person should be acting it!

I think some filipinos got their foot in the door, and left some natives out in the cold. But they’re used to it.

I agree with you Myself. It is important to stick with the story line. Or else the story will be off base. Using the proper people will make the story logical.

  6. soyouthinkyoucanwrite • February 11, 2009 @ 12:17 AM

hahahahahahahahahaha… yes, because having native people play the native roles will make the twilight story logical.

  7. Nancy • February 11, 2009 @ 1:46 AM

Well ‘Myself’, no, I am not native and yes, I said “colour”…even I (being white) am a “colour”. I have no clue what “colour” you are and I don’t care…it doesn’t matter. Please go back and look at your first comment and try to see it from my perspective…because until you replied, I had no idea that your comment was FOR native people. I thought it was another racist comment AGAINST natives. I’ve already stated my opinion on the other Twilight casting call article, which is that if they are looking for someone to be native then they should hire a native.

  8. ADAM • February 11, 2009 @ 2:08 PM

Nancy – “Myself”‘s first comment was very clear to me. maybe you should fully read the statment before sighting it as racist.

  9. mandee • February 11, 2009 @ 2:50 PM

adam – everyones opinion of racism is different, so before you accuse someone of not fully reading the statement, you should understand that everyone sees things from a different point of view, meaning nancy may have read the exact same comment as you did, but to her it means something completely different.

  10. My own opinion • February 11, 2009 @ 4:02 PM

    Nancy, Adam, Mandee

If you are referring to Myself’s Feb 10 posting at 3:03, I have read it several times and I can’t see how there is any possibility of it being interpreted as racist, or against Natives.

  11. Myself • February 11, 2009 @ 4:53 PM

Thank you very much for those who understood me… I aint racist or prejudice, not one bit. And yes I am Native, and it bugs me that my own people arent acting in roles meant for us. We have a lot of talented people, so why use a caucasian with a tan, a philipino or a korean person, when all the casting directors have to do is find “real” native person. That is the only thing that bothers me, and I probly aint the only one which it bothers. I’m sure that there are other nationalities that go threw that too!

  12. Nancy • February 11, 2009 @ 5:35 PM

Ok, I’ll explain how I interpreted it. I thought it was a non-native saying that “I hope they cast native people in the native roles because I’m sick of other nationalities taking OUR (as in the caucasian) roles.”

  13. Nancy • February 11, 2009 @ 5:37 PM

And that is why I said that I totally did not agree!! 😉

  14. mandee • February 12, 2009 @ 12:20 AM

and i wasnt even commenting really ON the post made by *myself* i was commenting on adam who was being rude to nancy. because i can see how she may have mistook it, depending how you look at it. everyone sees things differently, thats all im sayin.

  15. Nancy • February 13, 2009 @ 12:57 AM

And yes Adam, I DID fully read the statement…thanks for the pointer! Hopefully I will be able to remember to always read the statement…

  16. Mary Jo • February 24, 2009 @ 8:06 PM

    Ya….. Well Nancy,Adam,Mandee,Myself
I Agree With Myself Because Well I Am A Native And I Think Only A NATIVE Can Act Like A Native…. Not No Other Color!!! I Think That Scence The Wolf Things Are Native People Than They Should Be Played As Natives…. If Any Body Disagrees Than Please Write Back!!!!!!!!

  17. Mary Jo • February 24, 2009 @ 8:10 PM
