Hurt Locker makes history at Oscars

The Hurt Locker won six Oscars out from under Avatar‘s nose at the Academy Awards last night, including Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow. This marks the first time a woman director has ever won an Oscar in the 82 years since the awards began. The Hurt Locker also won Best Picture, beating out Avatar, which was a favorite to win. Most of the winners were predictable — Sandra Bullock, who looked absolutely stunning last night, won Best Actress for The Blind Side; Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart; Christophe Waltz for Inglourious Basterds; Mo’Nique for Precious. Despite being the highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar won only three awards — for Art Direction, Visual Effects and Cinematography. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were hilarious as the hosts, and a high point was the appearance of members of the Brat Pack (Matthew Broderick, Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson and Macaulay Culkin, — now fully grown up — honoring the memory of John Hughes. The ceremony moved along at a good pace and overall was one of the most entertaining Oscar ceremonies in years. Click here for a full list of winners. ~Alexandra Heilbron
