Independent Spirit Awards nominees announced

It’s official — awards season has begun. Nominees for the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards, which honors the best of the independent films released each year were announced this morning and the best feature nominees are 127 Hours, Winter’s Bone, Greenberg, The Kids Are All Right and Black Swan. Interestingly, four of the five best picture nominees have serious star power in them, such as Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder (Black Swan), Ben Stiller (Greenberg), Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right) and James Franco (127 Hours, but Winter’s Bone (pictured above), a Sundance Film Festival dramatic grand jury winner with no famous actors in it, received the most nominations at seven — best director, best female lead (Jennifer Lawrence), best supporting female, best supporting male (John Hawkes), screenplay and cinematography. The Kids Are All Right was close behind with five nominations. Black SwanGreenberg and Rabbit Hole each received four. Did you see any of these movies? Which do you think should win?

I saw Winter’s Bone, it was excellent and deserves to win. I saw The Kids are All Right too, but I didn’t really like it.

I saw it too, it was really good. I like it when there aren’t any recognizable actors, it kind of makes it easier to believe everything, you don’t sit there trying to forget that you’re watching Julia Roberts or Brad Pitt, who you’ve already seen in 20 movies.

Sounds great, I’ll have to check that one out!
