   My favorite holiday tradition is being home with our 4 kids on Christmas morning and opening our stockings before breakfast with them. We then make a big breakfast before we open any gifts under the tree. We then open the gifts under the tree and then we spend all t=day together playing with their new toys and play the new board game that Santa always brings us that year 🙂

    Christmas has been kind of ruined for me over the years. My mother is one of THOSE Christmas people that everything (decorations, tree, Christmas movies in JULY, etc) so seriously, having such stressful freak-outs if anything goes awry, that it sucks the fun out of something that used to feel special.

    However, there’s still one thing that’s special about the holidays for me. We have this ancient Disney’s Pluto felt decoration that I love putting up. He’s got a Santa’s hat on and is really showing his age. I had to replace his tail last year. Growing up my mother wouldn’t let us touch any of the breakable ornaments so my siblings and I would always fight for the privilege of putting up this Pluto.

     I love making a gingerbread village with my son and his friends. We have been making a village each winter for the past 20 years. I save my 250ml and 500ml milk cartons to use as the base of the house. Doesn’t matter how old you are it’s always fun to play with icing and candy.

     For 20 years now our family has volunteered at Santas Anonymous. Gifts are gathered from public donations, taken to a central location and then one Saturday before Christmas over 200 volunteers arrive to wrap gifts for over 1400 children in need. This is our family tradition and one that we prepare for for weeks in advance..

     I tell everyone about this special tradition whenever I get the chance! 🙂 We have a little table top manger my dad made 40+ years ago along with a porcelain Nativity scene. We have a basket of straw that we take one piece out and put it around baby Jesus’s bed for every good deed we do. The goal is to fill the manger with straw by our good deeds! 🙂 I love passing this tradition down to our own children. It reminds us to always be kind and to spread joy to others! It warms my heart! ❤️

     My favourite holiday tradition is when our entire family sits down together to try to figure out the answers to the annual giant Globe and Mail Christmas Crossword Puzzle! Yes, we are such nerds! We literally attack the paper when it arrives, pull the puzzle out, lay it out on our kitchen counter, and we all huddle over it, shouting out answers as we figure them out. Most years we get almost all the answers (although not all of them right!). Can’t wait for it – it comes out in this Saturday’s Globe!

     I never really grew up with holiday traditions. Being in a small family that isnt that close anymore was hard when it came around to the holidays. I think I tried to make my own. I remember when I was younger kids were talking about Santa and my mom never really pushed that idea on me. I ended up trying my best to believe in him even though I knew he wasnt real. Another is since we never really believed in Santa my mom would let me open SOME of my presents early.

     My one tradition that I started and continue every year is that each year since my oldest child was born (now 15), my kids each get a number of Christmas ornaments for the tree, typically themed to a movie/character/activity they enjoyed that year. This way, when they are grown and move out, they will have their own box of ornaments to start their first tree, along with the memories they hold.

     We have our northern European Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve. After dinner we gather around the tree, turn off all the lights except for the tree, and in that beautiful glow sing ‘O Christmas Tree’ and open our presents. Christmas morning we have stockings for the kids, filled with chocolate, nuts, an orange, gingerbread cookies and small gifts (like a book, or a pack of cards) to keep them occupied and happy until we visit or are visited by relatives and friends later in the day.

     My favourite holiday tradition is exchanging gifts with my sisters on Christmas Eve. Originally our parents started letting us open 1 present each on Christmas Eve. Usually a gift from a sister was chosen because they were always fun. Once we were old enough to pick out our own presents, we decided it wasn’t fair to open a gift from 1 sister and not the other. We convinced our parents to let us open both presents on Christmas Eve. Score!
     We have continued this tradition into adulthood and call it ‘Sismas’.

     I’ll always remember the excitement of Christmas morning. My siblings and I couldn’t wait to get up and open the presents under the tree, but we knew our parents had been up late making sure there were lots of surprises under the tree. We were allowed to quietly retrieve our stockings from the fireplace mantel while our parents got a chance to sleep in a bit. Gave us something to keep us busy until mom and dad got up and had a coffee. Then we would have someone hand out the presents, one at a time for each family member. That way my parents knew who gave us what gift in order to ensure we thanked everyone for their gifts. With 4 siblings the spectacle of the tree with all of the gifts piled around was something I will never forget or take for granted.

     My fav holiday tradition is the day we take our tree down. We call it demolition day. I make a ginger bread house every year and the kids get to destroy it the day the tree comes down. Each year they try to find new ways to destroy it, when they were younger and got tonka trucks for Christmas, they used the trucks .They wanted to blow it up one year , did not happen lol but they have fun and the neighbour kids started to come here to help.

     My favourite holiday tradition started back in the early 1970’s with my mother. She would gather us all around on Christmas Eve and again on New Year’s Eve before bedtime and we would light ‘angel’ candles. No lights on just the flickering light of the candles lit the room and we would get to make wishes. Not for ourselves – but for others and the world. When I left home I continued the tradition with my kids and now my grandkids. It is a really important tradition to all of us. I treasure these holiday memories with my mom and dad of years gone by with much love! Traditions are so important as it keeps us connected no matter where we may be.      Tradition is Christmas Eve my spouse and I have my two adult children over for a ham dinner. We open up Christmas presents from each other. On Christmas day my spouse and I get up and open up gifts from each other while having coffee and bailey’s. I make french toast with berries and whipping cream, maybe bacon or sausages for brunch. Around 3:00 pm we leave for my parents house for a turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

     Lighting several Menorahs, so that many get a chance to light a candle, everyone singing the blessings as we do, and eating the best jelly doughnuts of the year. After all, Chanukah is all about miracles and how the oil meant to last one day, lasted 8 days and so we eat foods based in oil and doughnuts HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST.

     My favorite Holiday tradition is the time spent with my kids. Traditionally we visit family earlier Christmas eve then return home where the kids finish the tree then put on PJs for movies & snacks. I am usually going between baking my shortbread’s prepping the next days dinner, and after kids are in bed… wrapping the last gifts. When they were younger they put on “concerts” for their Dad & I.
