This week’s new films includes a black comedy, a horror sequel and a psychological thriller. First up is Luc Besson‘s crime comedy The Family. Based on Tonino Benacquista’s novel, Badfellas, the film follows a Brooklyn mafia family forced to move into a small French town under the witness protection program after their father threatens their safety by snitching on the New York mob. In the lead roles are Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, who will finally appear on screen together again, having both previously starred in 2007’s Stardust and 2011’s New Year’s Eve. Playing their equally dangerous children are Dianna Agron and John D’Leo, with Tommy Lee Jones as the FBI agent assigned to their case.
Also new to theaters is a film that will get you ready for the upcoming Halloween season. Fresh from his success with The Conjuring, horror film auteur James Wan returns with Insidious: Chapter 2, a sequel to his 2011 haunted house hit. The Lambert family, led by Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne), are far from free of the evil that captured their son Dalton. This time around, they must discover the truth behind the mysterious connection between the males of the family and that of the spirit world. If this film repeats the success of the first, then don’t be surprised if this encourages more chapters like Wan’s previous hit with 2004’s Saw.
If neither film appeals to you, then your other option is Brian De Palma‘s Passion, a remake of Alain Corneau’s 2010 French thriller Crime d’amour. The erotic thriller follows the rivalry between Isbabelle (Noomi Rapace), an assistant at a Berlin-based advertising agency, and her manipulative boss, Christine (Rachel McAdams). The relationship between the mentor and her protégée turns twisted after Christine steals Isabelle’s viral marketing idea and claims it as her own. What follows is an unconventional battle for power between the two women, both in the workplace and beneath the bed sheets. ~Alfonso Espina
