Angelina Jolie sued for plagiarism

Angelina Jolie is being sued by Croatian journalist James J. Braddock, who says she stole the plot for her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, from an article he’d written that was published in 2007. The suit, filed in Illinois, says Braddock’s article and Jolie’s screenplay, which she wrote, are both about a rape victim who winds up working as a servant in the camp occupied by the soldiers who’ve abused her. The suit says that both the article and the movie “depict a love story that takes place in war-torn Bosnia in the 1990s. Both are about a female character who is captured and imprisoned in a Serbian-held camp located in a village, which the suit says: “was highly unusual since most camps were located in abandoned industrial or agricultural complexes.” In both the film and the article, the main character is subject to continuous rape by soldiers and officers, and is forced to become a servant at the camp headquarters. The deputy camp commander in both stories has a father who is a high-ranking “Greater Serbian” nationalist and important officer of the Yugoslav Peoples Army. In both, he falls in love with the servant and decides to help her escape. Braddock has requested a jury trial and is seeking unspecified damages. In the Land of Blood and Honey opens December 23rd.
