Astro Boy flies high with Kristen Bell and Freddie Highmore

astro boyThe panel for Summit Entertainment’s Astro Boy featured appearances by two of its stars, Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Freddie Highmore (August Rush, The Spiderwick Chronicles) and premiered clips from the movie, as well as a new trailer. “I want people to look at this film and feel the same way people in the 1950’s felt. I want them to love this character for the same reasons.” said director David Bowers.

British actor Highmore, who voices the title character, stated that while he did a little research on the classic TV/Manga cartoon character, for this modern retelling he wanted to make his own mark. “Astro Boy is a human trapped in a robot’s body, and I think that’s something that people can relate to, trying to fit into society, or in Astro Boy’s case, fitting into a family.”

Kristen Bell’s character, Cora, is a new addition to the Astro Boy universe, which Bell described as “kinda sassy, kinda opinionated – she’s got a tough exterior and a soft interior. She’s fun, she’s wonderful.”

The Astro Boy clips included a chase sequence, a scene from the climactic fight scene with a giant one-eyed tentacle monster, and the trailer, which literally ended with Astro Boy saying, “I’ve got machine guns… in my butt?!” Although some of the animation sequences weren’t complete, reports indicate that the movie will be extremely fun.

Aside from Nicholas Cage, Donald Sutherland and Nathan Lane lending their voices to the movie, it was announced at the panel that Charlize Theron and Samuel L. Jackson have also signed on to the project.

Astro Boy opens on October 23, 2009.
