Mary Poppins Returns is gearing up to take flight on the backs of several A-listers, and the latest talent to reportedly be attached to the project is British actor Ben Whishaw.
Ben, 35, best known for roles in Skyfall, Spectre and The Danish Girl, is rumored to play the adult version of Michael Banks in the film. If cast, he would join confirmed stars Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Meryl Streep‘s name was also recently tossed around as a potential addition to the sequel to the 1964 classic.
The film will be set 25 years after the Oscar-winning Julie Andrews hit and will be helmed by Into the Woods director Rob Marshall.
Emily will step into the role of the magical Mary, while Lin-Manuel is slated to portray a street lamplighter named Jack.
Set to begin shooting in London in early 2017, the story will center on a grown Jane and Michael Banks — and Michael’s three children — as they grapple with a recent tragedy. Mary and Jack will be inserted into the story to help the struggling Banks family rediscover the joys of life.
Ben has proven himself to be a fine actor with diverse performances in Perfume: The Story of Murderer, Cloud Atlas and even in Paddington (he voiced the titular character), but whether he can rise to the vocal challenge of the original songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman remains to be seen…and heard. Mary Poppins Returns is scheduled for a December 25, 2018 release.
What do you think of Ben’s potential involvement in the film? A spoonful of magic or a surefire misstep? Let us know!

YES! This is music to my ears.
He’s a phenomenal actor! I really hope both he and Meryl join the cast. It would be cute if Julie had some sort of cameo too.
