Cars 2 zooms past competition at box office

The new animated Pixar film Cars 2 debuted at the top of the box office with $68 million (all figures US), surpassing the box office opening of the original movie ($60.1 million in 2006) and earning 3.7 out of 5 stars from Tribute viewers. Cameron Diaz as Bad Teacher opened in second place, earning a solid $31 million and 3.6 stars. Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds dropped to third place with ticket sales tumbling 65 percent to $18.4 million for its second weekend. The sci-fi thriller Super 8 starring Kyle Chandler slipped a spot to fourth, earning an additional $18.4 million and a 4 star rating with Tribute viewers. Mr. Popper’s Penguins rounded out the top five with $10.3 million.
