Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train posterBoth Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train had successful debuts last weekend, with Mortal Kombat earning slightly more. This week, the anime film Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train had a slight edge and went on to top the weekend box office. It finished with $6.4 million for a two-week gross of $34.1 million.

The action/adventure film Mortal Kombat dropped to second place in its sophomore weekend, earning $6.2 million domestically for a two-week total of $34.1 million. Based on the popular video game franchise, the Warner Bros. film was released simultaneously on HBO Max in the U.S. and on PVOD in Canada.

Godzilla vs. Kong remained in third place, taking in an additional $2.7 million for a four-week total of $90.3 million.

The horror film Separation starring Rupert Friend debuted in the fourth spot. The only new wide release this week, it earned $1.8 million.

Hanging on to fifth place for the second weekend in a row was Walt Disney’s animated film Raya and the Last Dragon. Now in its ninth weekend at the box office, it earned an additional $1.3 million for a total of $41.6 million. ~Alexandra Heilbron
