Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed that the hacking the studio experienced seems to have been a hoax, telling Yahoo Finance: “To our knowledge we were not hacked.”
You may remember the Disney CEO explaining a couple weeks ago that Disney was the victim of a security breach that saw one of their upcoming films stolen. While the name of the film was never released or confirmed, rumors were that it was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which hits theaters this weekend.
The hacker requested a ransom be payed in bitcoin or risk the film being leaked online in 20-minute chunks. But it seems it may have been a case of blustering as Iger confirmed nothing came of the threat. The studio took the threat seriously, of course, but did not agree to any of the hacker’s demands.
Iger explained, “We decided to take [the threat] seriously but not react in the manner in which the person who was threatening us had required.” He added, “We don’t believe that it was real and nothing has happened.”
Iger admits that in an age of technology, while there are many benefits, threats such as this come with the territory and the risks need to be discussed: “In today’s world, cyber security is a front burner issue…We like to view technology more friend than foe… [but] it is also a disruptor.”
