Episode 4 – The Whole World Is Watching

Warning – spoilers ahead.

So far, episode 4 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier seems to be the darkest one of all – and I have to say, we were not ready for that shocking ending.

In the opening scene, we see a flashback to six years earlier in Wakanda, when Ayo (Florence Kasumba) cleansed Bucky (Sebastian Stan) from his brainwashing and thereby freed him from Hydra.

Now, Ayo and the Dora Milaje are in town to take Zemo (Daniel Brühl) back — he is responsible for the death of their leader. She gives Sam (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky eight hours before they come for him. Sam, Bucky and Zemo have a conversation about the super serums and the power that comes with it. “The desire to become a superhuman cannot be separated from supremacist ideals,” says Zemo.

Later, it’s not just Ayo and her crew, but John Walker (Wyatt Russell) and Lemar Hoskins (Clé Bennett) also show up to capture Zemo. This is when John realizes he can’t hold his own in a fight against Ayo, who isn’t even a super soldier — and this frustrates him.

Sam finally has a one-on-one conversation with Flag Smasher leader Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman), and Sam tells her that he agrees with her fight, just not the way she’s chosen to fight it. The Flag Smashers are trying to help people who were displaced by the Blip and we are given more backstory on how they suffered.

In the face-off against the Flag Smashers, Zemo finds and destroys the super serum vials. However, John finds one vial and ultimately decides to take the super serum.

Wyatt Russell as Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter SoldierThe Verdict

This episode revealed motivations and backstories, with the focus being on Karli and John. Their take on patriotism and what’s right comes to light, and while the MCU has always maintained a clear distinction of good vs. evil, we are now given gray areas. The fact that Sam — who’s our best moral compass — understands Karli’s fight, allows the audience to question her role as a villain.

With our heroes and villains finally clashing face to face, we got a good dose of action. It was a treat to see the Wakandans, as their fight choreography is also noticeably different than our superheroes. It was a welcomed sequence in the series, reminding us of how massive and well-connected the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe really is.

Now that we know what’s at stake, I can’t wait to see how the next two episodes go about and what the series is really leading up to. Even the fate of John Walker now hangs in the air and it would be interesting to see how the public and the government handles it.
