Disney’s Aladdin becomes prince of the weekend box office

For the second consecutive weekend there is a new number one film at the box office.

Aladdin, Walt Disney Studios’ latest live-action remake of an animated classic, led this past weekend’s new releases to take over the top spot from last week’s number one film, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

The Guy Ritchie-directed remake brought in an estimated $86.1 million across the three-day weekend, a marked improvement over Disney’s last few live-action efforts in Dumbo ($45.9 million), The Nutcracker and the Four Realms ($20.3 million), and Alice Through the Looking Glass ($26.8 million).

Despite early negative reception of Will Smith’s Genie, the film performed within studio expectations despite pacing behind the opening weekends of Beauty and the Beast ($174.8 million) and The Jungle Book ($103.3 million).

Dropping to second place was the aforementioned John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. In its second weekend at the box office the action flick brought in an estimated $24.4 million, bringing up its 10-day domestic total to almost $101 million. The film’s new total pushes the sequel past John Wick: Chapter 2‘s $92 million domestic total to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

Falling to third was Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. The conclusion to the Infinity Saga brought in an additional $16.8 million at the box office to push it just under the $800 million threshold, a feat only Star Wars: The Force Awakens has managed to achieve. Endgame will have to settle for second as it is unlikely for the film to catch up to The Force Awakens‘ $936 million domestic total. However, the film will also be closer to reaching number one status for worldwide gross as it creeps in on Avatar‘s $2.7 billion record.

Finding itself in fourth was Pokémon Detective Pikachu, as the video game adaptation brought in an additional $13.3 million at the box office. That pushes its domestic total to over $116 million, surpassing The Angry Birds Movie ($107 million) to become the second highest-grossing video game adaptation ever. With a couple more weekends in the top five, Detective Pikachu should surpass Lara Croft: Tomb Raider ($131 million) to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

Rounding out the top five was the second of three new releases, Brightburn, a horror take on Superman’s origin story from producer James Gunn. In a crowded field of bigger budgeted films, the flick still managed to bring in over $7.5 million at the box office — more than its reported $6 million production budget. ~Paolo Maquiraya
