Dragon wins despite slowest box office weekend of the year

Although box office revenue was down 12 percent compared to this time last year according to the L.A. Times, How to Train Your Dragon managed to do well both in the U.S. and Canada, holding on to the top spot at the box office with $15 million (Tribute users ranking: 4.6 out of 5 stars) in its fifth weekend at the box office. Canadians joined their American neighbors in helping the new film The Back-Up Plan starring Jennifer Lopez land second spot with $12.3 million (Tribute users ranking: 4.2). “I thought we’d have this piece of the pie, but I also thought that the overall pie would be bigger,” said Stephen Friedlander, CBS Films, of their film The Back-Up Plan. In its second week of release, Date Night earned $10.6 million (Tribute users ranking: 4.1). Another new movie, The Losers, managed to get into the top five with $9.6 million (Tribute users ranking: 4.2), while Kick-Ass followed closely behind in its second weekend with $9.5 million (Tribute users ranking: 4.4). In Canada, Kick-Ass was in fourth place, while Clash of the Titans held on to fifth place (Tribute users ranking: 3.3), despite being in sixth place in the States, earning an additional $9 million.
