Endless Love Blu-ray/DVD review

Endless Love, starring Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde, is a romantic dish that is best served to a young bunch of movie lovers who can’t resist a romantic film. Alex Pettyfer plays David, a troubled boy from a poor family, while Gabriella Wilde plays rich and lonely Jade. David has had a crush on Jade all through high school, but never worked up the courage to ask her out. When they bump into each other at a classy country club where David works as a valet and Jade arrives to have dinner with her family, he finally gets the chance to talk to her. There’s an instant connection between the two and when one of the customers is rude to David and another valet, they take the man’s expensive car for a drive. When they return, there’s an altercation between David and the customer, resulting in David losing his job.

Nonetheless, Jade invites him to a graduation party at her house. When she introduces David to her family, her father remembers the fight at the country club and is suspicious. As it becomes clear that his daughter is falling in love with David, her father does a check into his background. David and Jade face challenges as her overprotective father and David’s mysterious past create obstacles in the relationship.

It was hard to envision Alex Pettyfer as good boy David, not only because he’s played intense bad boy characters in the past, like his role in Beastly, but because of the bad press he gets due to his alleged antics on set. But if you can let go of that, he turns in a good performance, despite being somewhat miscast. For her part, Gabriella perfected her studious, introvert character. Her fresh face and innocence charms the audience from the start.

While older moviegoers may prefer the 1981 rendition of the film starring Brooke Shields, young fans will undoubtedly enjoy this newer version. The story is predictable but enjoyable. Exclusive Blu-ray features include Extended Ending and Deleted/Alternate Scenes. Other films releasing on Blu-ray/DVD this week include Cheap Thrills, Gambit and Rhymes for Young Ghouls. ~Marriska Fernandes
