Ewan McGregor defends James McAvoy

By Tribute on March 28, 2013 | 7 Comments

Jack The Giant Slayer actor Ewan McGregor has stepped up to defend fellow Scot, actor James McAvoy. On Monday morning, BBC magazine show Hardtalk criticized McAvoy, who’s currently starring in a London production of Macbeth,  saying he was an example of how movie stars are being used as a ploy to sell tickets. The X-Men: First Class star, 33,  is currently playing William Shakespeare’s tragic king at the Trafalgar Studios in the British capital. The BBC show also claimed movie stars tend to accept stage plays when they have a film coming out soon as a way to promote it. McAvoy’s latest film, Trance, opens next month. McGregor, 41, took to Twitter to say, “Hardtalk moaning about celebs in theater. Using James McAvoy as an eg. Ridiculous. Don’t they know he’s a brilliant actor. Come on BBC!” ~Carlos Laron

I would have thought McAvoy had started in theatre, most Brits do, but I just read his bio on Tribute and he’s been screen all the way. So maybe they have a point.

Why is this such a problem? Advertisers use celebrities to endorse their products ALL…THE… TIME. Seeing an actor star in a play production, yeah sure it helps promote the play, but people are now coming back to see theatre productions. Maybe it would intrigue them to watch future plays. A win-win.

I thought the opposite, that he’s in the play to help promote the play. The movies and studios have enough money invested in commercials etc they can sell it any way they like.

Whether in a movie or on stage, at least they are working at what they love to do. Plus it stretches their acting abilities to do both genres. Let the promoters of both hype whatever aspect they want so long as it brings in the loving public
