F9 Movie Poster. Two new films were released this holiday weekend, but last weekend’s heavy hitter F9: The Fast Saga came out on top for the second weekend in a row, adding a momentous $24 million for a grand total of $125.9 million domestic. That officially beats out A Quiet Place Part II, which previously held the pandemic record for its first two weekends.

Now, the ninth installment in the Fast saga which stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, John Cena, and Charlize Theron has emerged as one of the summer’s biggest releases, at least until Disney’s Black Widow comes out next weekend to rival the action flick.

In second place, the brand new release The Boss Baby: Family Business outperformed its competitor The Forever Purge to gross a very comfortable $17.4 million this weekend. The animated family film, which features the voices of Alec Baldwin and James Marsden, is the sequel to The Boss Baby, which grossed $50.2 million in its first weekend back in March 2017. Falling in short of its predecessor, the animated sequel should perform well over the next few weeks as the trend for family films during the pandemic has been smaller debuts with above average holding power in the weeks following.

In third was The Forever Purge, the fifth entry in the Purge series. The last movie was released in 2018 and while the earlier films all performed pretty consistently at the box office, The Forever Purge didn’t attract the same level of press as its predecessors. That said, critical reviews for the film have been mixed and the horror movie starring Josh Lucas and Will Patton still debuted with a solid $12.7 million this weekend.

For the first time in six weeks, A Quiet Place Part II dropped from the top two to land in fourth place. The thriller, which has performed exceedingly well and remains the highest grossing film since the reopening of theaters, added another $4.2 million this weekend. The total currently stands at $145.7 million as the film inches closer to the $150 million domestic mark.

Edging out Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and Cruella, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard took fifth place this weekend as it added another $3 million. That brings the action sequel’s total to $32.2 million over three weeks. ~Cassandra Coleman
