Fan Expo: Day One Roundup with Matt Smith and Zachary Levi!

Matt Smith answering fan questionsAnother year, another incredible Fan Expo. Read on for what happened on Day 1 (Thursday), including Matt Smith (pictured at left) telling us about the tricks he pulled on Karen Gillan on the set of Dr. Who and get a sneak peek at the costumes from Thor: Ragnarok. Check back for daily coverage of the convention.

Matt Smith
Thousands poured in to see Dr. Who star Matt Smith. He was anything but serious, joking about how the Emmys are swine for not giving him an award, and also Marvel and Martin Scorsese for not casting him in their productions. Fans were amused to learn that Matt’s decision to wear a tweed blazer while auditioning for Dr. Who is the reason his Doctor wears tweed.

As for Jodie Whittaker, who was recently announced as the first female Dr. Who, Matt has nothing but kind words. “She’s a brilliant actress, I think she’s going to rock it,” he said.

While on the set of Dr. Who, Matt said he would pull pranks on co-star Karen Gillan. He once hid in the shower of her trailer, which scared her to the point of tears. Matt said he misses making Karen cry.

He praised Karen’s performance as Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. He joked that he’d love to rub her head (the character is bald).

Cerina Vincent
Cerina Vincent is best known for playing Maya, the Yellow Ranger in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. Cerina wanted no cameras as she dished on the truth behind why she was cast on the TV series. As it turns out, the woman originally cast as the Yellow Ranger behaved like a total diva on set. She was such a burden that the production let her go and quickly cast Cerina in her place. Cerina, who now stars on the hit Disney show Stuck in the Middle, spoke about the importance of staying humble as an actor.

Zachary Levi
The Tangled star played everyone’s favorite spy on the hit television series Chuck and currently voices his character in the new show Tangled: The Series,  as well as playing a role on the new series Alias Grace, which is filmed in Toronto. He graciously answered fan questions about his various roles, but the most memorable moment came when he personified TIFF (The Toronto International Film Festival) as a valley girl. Zachary graciously thanked his fans. “The only reason we get to do TV and movies is because you support us,” he said. “You are the patrons of the arts.”
