Fault In Our Stars takes top spot at box office

Girl power ruled the top of the box office this past weekend as Fox’s teen romantic drama, The Fault In Our Stars, debuted at #1 with $48.2 million domestic, knocking Disney’s Maleficent into second place, which took in an additional $33.5 million in North America for a total of $127.4 million after its first week of release. Although neither film has been in theaters for long, they have been received quite warmly by Tribute users, who voted The Fault In Our Stars a rating of 4.5 stars and Maleficent, 4.4 stars out of five. However, the bankability of Tom Cruise’s name would not be enough to stall that of Angelina Jolie’s. His action thriller, Edge of Tomorrow, received 4 stars from Tribute users and the film debuted at #3 with $29.1 million, knocking X-Men: Days of Future Past down a peg into fourth place with 14.7 million. Fortunately for Fox, the latest installment of the mutant franchise, with a Tribute user rating of 3.8 stars, is one of the highest grossing films of 2014 at $189 million domestic and counting.
Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways To Die In The West earned an additional $7.2 million for a total of $30.2 million since its release last week, and assumes its place as the fifth top earner this past weekend. ~Daniel Horowitz
