Gerard Butler shot twice in head

By Alexandra Heilbron on September 23, 2011 | 19 Comments

While promoting his new movie Machine Gun Preacher, Gerard Butler admitted he was shot twice in the head while filming the movie. He told E! Online while on the red carpet Wednesday night: “It was a shell, but it sounds better to get shot.” Describe the incident in further detail, he explained, “The shell hit me, slit my head, it was pouring with blood. About twenty minutes later, we finally stopped the bleeding. We went again and another shell hit me! Within half an inch of the first one [and] slit my head again.” The shells came from co-star Souleymane Sy Savane’s gun, but in his defense, he says the scene was filmed at night and he was having a difficult time seeing what was going on. “It was kind of serious,” he told E! “It was a pretty intense scene. We were being attacked by a bunch of rebels at night. So I would say for my defense, I couldn’t really see.”

    Considering the threats against his life, you may want to reconsider the headline, as I expected he had been murdered…

    I don’t know what he means when he says it was a shell, but it sounds better to get shot. He was still shot, whether it was a bullet or a shell, and if it took 20 minutes to stop the bleeding, that sounds pretty serious. Why aren’t they using blanks, anyway? There have been enough instances of actors being shot on sets (James Cagney was almost shot in the head once but he refused to stand in the area where the shots were being fired, and saved himself an early death) that you’d think they’d use more safe methods, maybe add in the shots/effects later on rather than put guns with live ammunition in actors hands.

    TRIBUTE needs to honestly quit misleading their viewers on this site, false advertising and false misrepresentation of information just for a play on words. Going to call them on Monday and ask why their headline was inaccurate.

    Irresponsible headline.

    It was a misleading headline but got us all to look at it, so I guess it worked. Just really bad timing after the one about threats to his life.
    But yeah I’m sure there wasn’t safely glasses on, so what if it took out an eye? I’m sure they could have digitally erased the safety glasses if they were smart enough to wear them. BUT otherwise based on this it makes me want to watch the movie as well.

    @Connie.

    The difference is that a projectile (what most people refer to as a bullet) is only part of the cartridge or round–the part that will exit the barrel and hit whatever it has been aimed at. The shell, however, is the part of the cartridge that after the bullet has been ejected by the propellents, will remain. This shell, in most modern guns, is then ejected when the firearm is primed (cocked) again. Also, they probably WERE using “blanks”; the only difference between these and normal cartridge rounds are that blanks don’t have the bullet part, only a shell that will make a flash and noise when fired–but still will be ejected from the firearm So no, he was not shot at all, he was hit with the ejecting cartridges (shells), though regardless, it would still hurt.

    Why was there not proper unset lighting? Yes I agree about using blanks, Brandon Lee died because of a gun and a bullet misake. Actors use stunt doubles if they or their handlers dont want them to risks, some worry about their pride or dont have the skills to do it themself or just want the rush and fun. Companies also have insurance on big actors.

    If he gets hit by a shell for every bad movies he made, he might end up in a coma.

  14. JustSaying • September 26, 2011 @ 8:21 PM

    Also, it was probably the way he was holding the gun. If you hold it sideways (ganster style) the shell will eject into your face.
