Nominations for the 78th Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning (Feb 3, 2021).
Netflix dominated on both fronts, bagging the most nominations in both film and television. On the film side, David Fincher‘s Mank led with six nominations, followed by Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 with five nods. On the television front, The Crown led with six nominations, followed by the comedy Schitt’s Creek with five.
Chadwick Boseman, who died last year after a battle with colon cancer, received a posthumous nomination for his role in the Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. TV pioneer Norman Lear will receive the Carol Burnett Award and Jane Fonda will be presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
In a historic turn of events, three women have been nominated in the Best Director category: Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, Regina King for One Night in Miami… and Chloé Zhao for Nomadland. This is the first time more than one woman has appeared in the category. Only five female directors have been nominated in the past 77 years, with the last nod being Ava DuVernay in 2014 for Selma.
The Golden Globes ceremony will air live on February 28, 2021 on NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return as hosts. Check out the complete list of nominations below. ~Marriska Fernandes
