Hurt Locker producer banned from Oscars

The Hurt Locker producer Nicolas Chartier has been banned from attending the Oscar ceremony this Sunday night because he sent an email to members of the Academy asking them to vote for The Hurt Locker for Best Picture and “not a $500M film,” adding, “we need independent movies to win like the movies you and I do, so if you believe The Hurt Locker is the best movie of 2010, help us!” Because he was asking people not to vote for Avatar, he broke the Academy’s rules, which “prohibit one nominee from criticizing the film of another nominee.” Chartier has admitted to sending the emails to personal aquaintances, and apologized in writing, saying: “My naiveté, ignorance of the rules and plain stupidity as a first-time nominee is not an excuse for this behavior and I strongly regret it…Being nominated for an Academy Award is the ultimate honor and I should have taken the time to read the rules.” Several entertainment bloggers have spoken out against the ban. As we wait for the second installment of the Avatar films to arrive this December, director James Cameron dropped The Way of Water’s runtime, and it’s long!

While I absolutely agree with his point, it was bad manners and against protocol. I think it is too bad that by promoting his own excellent film he felt he should denigrate another. I prefer The Hurt Locker to Avatar, but he made a grave misstep with his petty e-mail.
Idiot.. his Hurt Locker is garbage, even Avatar is better (but what am I saying!? Don’t I know that it’s “IN” to criticize Avatar?)…
Why do anybody really care what those politically inflated members of “the Academy” choose as the “Best” this and that? Don’t you people have opinions? If you like the Hurt Locker better than even District 9, so be it! Who am I, and who are they, to tell you differently?
The Oscars is just a joke, anyway…

As far as which movie is the best to win an Oscar…..I think it’s all according to taste. Everyone doesn’t like the same movies, that’s why they’re all different. Various movie types appeal to different age groups. Overall, I think boxoffice sales speak of who should win the Oscars.

Minerva, I agree, it should come down to boxoffice sales, that way it’s the paying public who are choosing, not some overinflated windbag (ok, ok, I don’t know these people, they might be very nice!), who was possibly badgered into voting a certain way.
Ignorance of the rules is no excuse.

Box office sales don’t say a movie is great. A movie can get tons of hype and millions go to the theater to the find out the movie is crap!
Rules are rules and without them the world would fall apart so maybe next time he should pay attention and let the movie speak for itself.
Wow. The man produced the film and he doesn’t have faith in how good his own film is, that he has to go bash another film.
He’s more worried about a golden statue then the dignity of his own film. That’s so sad. He should have been proud of even getting a nomination considering how many good film there are out there, I know amongst many that where not so good but still.
You can tell this man is in it for the money and fame as oppose to the passion of a film. Winners who actually get awarded an Academy Award actually end up getting tons of opportunities with even more expensive films that will be possible Academy nominees in the future, and who would say no to that! So if this man would win this award, his next project could very well be a big budget film, which kind of gets hypocritical cause that’s what he’s criticizing now.
All he said is he thinks his should win. He didn’t say he’ll bomb them if his don’t. Their rules are to rigid. His enthousiasam got the best of him. It is most unfortunate especially since he got nominated to get blown out on a technicality.
