Idina Menzel too old to star in Wicked movie

By Tribute on May 6, 2014 | 2 Comments

Idina Menzel’s star couldn’t be higher, having played everyone’s favorite ice queen in Frozen and with her hit song from the show, “Let It Go,” gracing the pop charts, but her age might exclude her from a “wicked” role. Idina, who was the first to play Elphaba on Broadway in the hit musical Wicked, was asking during an interview on Watch What Happens Live if she’s been approached for the role in the long rumored Wicked movie. She joked that she was asked to play Elphaba’s mother, then said she and Kristin Chenoweth, who played Glinda in the original production, were told they were “too old” to play the leads. This sadly does make sense as the story is set during Glinda and Elphaba’s college years and Kristin and Idina are both in their forties.

However, there’s no need to feel sorry for Idina and Kristin, as the Tony-winning actresses are enjoying quite a bit of success. Kristin starred in Rio 2 and was just cast as Peter in NBC’s upcoming Peter Pan Live. Idina is starring in a new Broadway musical called If/Then, about a woman in her forties who moves to New York for a fresh start. ~Dylan Paisley

I can’t wait to see the musical for my fiancee’s birthday present at the end of the month in Vancouver. Then I’ll see if it’s movie worthy and Hollywood will likely bastardize it, of course.

They could just animate the movie rather than live action. I believe it would do really well, especially following frozen.
