Jackson’s Neverland rides live on

Neverland in 2005Michael Jackson‘s 18 Neverland rides have been auctioned off, with some being enjoyed at country fairs, billed as “Michael Jackson’s rides from Neverland Ranch.” They include the Spider, the Wave Swinger and the Zipper. Benny Vasquez, who rode the Spider at the Tulare County Fair in California, told the Los Angeles Times: “It’s exciting for people to be able to sit on something that he owned.” Stacey Lowe, 16, said, “It’s awesome that some part of Michael lives on.” Corey Oakley, a manager with the company that owns and operates the rides, says people have been really enthusiastic about the opportunity. “It’s a big deal for people,” he revealed. “They’ve heard so much about Neverland: They want to touch it, to see it, to feel it, to ride it.” Erica Manuel of the Cal Expo fairgrounds, said, “Based on the feedback we got, it was a positive, nice experience. For some, it was a way to say goodbye.” Other Neverland rides have found permanent homes — his Sea Dragon, a Viking Ship that swings back and forth, is at the Beech Bend amusement park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Others are at New York’s Coney Island. It’s a fitting end for the rides, since one of Jackson’s greatest joys was to bring happiness to children. “These rides are built to move people every day,” said Oakley. “But at Neverland they just sat and sat.”
