James Franco: Maybe I am gay

By Alexandra Heilbron on January 7, 2011 | 8 Comments

James Franco, who’s getting Oscar buzz for his role in 127 Hours, is getting tired of being asked why he’s accepted so many gay roles, in films such as Milk, Howl and the upcoming The Broken Tower. Numerous media outlets have speculated that the actor is gay in real life. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he explained: “There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys. I mean, I’ve played a gay man who’s living in the ’60s and ’70s, a gay man who we depicted in the ’50s, and one being in the ’20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition.” But eventually he gets tired of talking about it and tells the journalist dismissively, “You know what, maybe I’m just gay.”

    He was joking.

How does the media do this to people? Bronson Pinchot from Perfect Strangers played a gay character twice in Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 3. Marlon or Damon Wayne also played a gay character, minor role in Beverly Hills Cop 1. People didn’t chastise them or make their life a living hell. Sheesh, the media knows how to hurt people and leave them feeling like less than they’re worth.

omg he might be gay lalalala make a big deal!

Sexual orientation is probably the most irrelevant attribute a person has, at least in my head. Maybe this is a 20/21st century social oddity, but I’ve never cared what a person is into.

Very good actor, but it really doesn’t matter whether he is gay or straight.

    Yawn…….

wtf… way to take a bit of sarcasm and twist it into a misleading headline. Who gives a sh*t if he’s gay. He’s an awesome actor. What about Jake Gyllenhaal? He and Heath Ledger played gay roles in the most notorious Gay film in recent years. I suppose he’s gay too?

Cool article, because he’s obviously joking. He sounds like a cool guy. I love the headline, too, it caught my eye, got me interested in reading it. He said it, but the way he said it makes it obvious he’s not gay and he’s tired of being asked about it.

love Franco and love his response to the gay question… journalists just doing their job, wanting the first scoop on anything celebrities do, yup, even if it’s doing the same sex….personally wouldn’t matter to me who is or isn’t gay…

What’s the headline next week for this journalist “Maybe I’m Straight” says Neil Patrick Harris???

Well since he(a gay man) plays a straight on TV, He must be secretly staight right?

David Hyde Peirce “really” had us all fooled for years on Fraiser!!!

Jodie Foster plays a women married to Mel Gibson in her next film, Maybe she is really straight after all?
