Jared Leto blinded himself for Blade Runner 2049

Jared Leto in Blade Runner 2049Always known for intense method acting, Jared Leto pulled out all the stops for his bad and blind character, Niander Wallace, in the upcoming sci-fi film Blade Runner 2049, including purposely impairing his vision for the role.

In the film, Niander Wallace is the CEO of Wallace Corporation, a replicant manufacturer — he’s also blind. This adds an extra challenge to the role for Jared, but Jared apparently saw it as another opportunity to challenge his skill as an actor. To do that, he blinded himself throughout the shoot for the film.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Jared revealed he wore contact lenses that blinded him. The film’s director, Denis Villeneuve, was so impressed with Jared’s dedicated acting decisions that he felt it brought something powerful to the character and even awed the crew, saying, “He could not see at all. He was walking with an assistant, very slowly. It was like seeing Jesus walking into a temple. Everybody became super silent, and there was a kind of sacred moment. Everyone was in awe. It was so beautiful and powerful — I was moved to tears.”

Jared has picked up a bit of a reputation for being an intense method actor, willing to go to almost any extreme for his characters. On the set of Suicide Squad where he played maniacal madman The Joker, he never broke character on or off set, even refusing to answer to his real name. He also didn’t spend time with the cast and sent them inappropriate gifts including a live rat to co-star Margot Robbie.

While his role as The Joker was brief in the film, it was definitely memorable, which means his character in Blade Runner 2049 has a good chance of having the same effect on audiences. Find out for yourself when the film hits theaters on October 6th. ~Alexa Caruso

I have to agree with “Skeptical”
I’m sure he was impressive with his dedication and going the extra mile with “blinding himself” but to compare him to Jesus?! That’s sacrilegious! I don’t care how dedicated he is to his profession, he’s still in no way Jesus! That comment was absolutely ridiculous and I can’t believe you actually reported it.
