Jared Leto’s Justice League Joker redesign revealed

Jared Leto as JokerWith a little over a month and a half away from being released on HBO Max, director Zack Snyder continues to hype up the release of his cut of Justice League. After teasing the addition of Jared Leto‘s Joker last week with an out of focus image, the director has revealed two new images of his redesign for the clown prince of crime.

The black-and-white photos present a starkly different look for Jared Leto’s Joker when compared to his previous appearance in David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad in 2016. In contrast to his glamorous and tattooed gangster in Suicide Squad, Snyder’s vision for the Joker in Justice League is more minimal. Though he features the typical white makeup and lipstick audiences have come to expect from the character, gone are the tattoos from Ayer’s design, with Leto’s version also having grown out his hair, donning a more simple get up.

It’s a design more reminiscent of Heath Ledger‘s Joker than any other previous incarnation of the character — and that should come as no surprise. With each live action appearance for the Joker has come a unique look based upon the director’s vision for the character. As for how the character will appear in the film, it’s been speculated that the Joker will appear in one of the film’s “Knightmare” sequences, that tease a future where the villainous Darkseid has conquered Earth.

Based on the setting of the photos it appears that Leto’s Joker will share a scene with Ben Affleck‘s Batman during a “Knightmare” sequence, as teased in a previous image released by Snyder.

Although Leto was not originally planned to be part of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the director was able to bring in Leto on a cold call after a long campaign by fans to restore the director’s vision for the film. The project was officially greenlit early last year with Snyder given a substantial budget to complete the project. Not only was Snyder able to finish up the incomplete visual effects unused for the theatrical cut, but was able to add new footage through reshoots for the ambitious project.

As recently revealed by the director himself, Zack Snyder’s Justice League fans and those curious about the film will be able to finally see it on HBO Max starting March 18, 2021. ~Paolo Maquiraya
