Actor Jason Patric had a son with girlfriend Danielle Schreiber using in-vitro fertilization. However, they have since split and thanks to California law, which doesn’t give sperm donors parental rights unless they’re married to the mother (or have a written agreement), Jason has no rights to his son Gus, who is now three. Schrieber cut off contact between Gus and Jason 38 weeks ago and so on Wednesday, Jason hosted a “Stand Up for Gus” fundraiser in Los Angeles. He told the New York Post: “I don’t have nights with Gus anymore, so I’m going to have this evening, and we’re going to shine a light on this injustice.” Supporters to his cause include Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Mel Gibson and Kiefer Sutherland. Jason plans to make the fundraiser an annual event to to raise money to support families “broken down from this system,” so they can afford legal defense.
