Jeremy Irons in hot water over gay marriage comments

By Tribute on April 5, 2013 | 3 Comments

During an interview with the Huffington Post, Jeremy Irons voiced strong opinions about the creation of a law legalizing same-sex marriage in Britain. According to Irons, the law could create legal loopholes with fathers marrying sons, for example, to avoid Britain’s inheritance tax. “Could a father not marry his son?,” he theorized. “It’s not incest between men (because) incest (law) is there to protect us from inbreeding, but men don’t breed…” However, he insists he doesn’t have a strong opinion on same-sex marriage either way. “Living with another animal, whether it be a husband or a dog, is great,” he said, “It’s lovely to have someone to love … What it’s called doesn’t matter at all.” Irons’ comments have enraged gay rights campaigners, including gay actor Alan Cumming. Following an eight-year marriage to actress Hilary Lyon that ended in 1993, he came out of the closet and is now in a civil union with a man. Best known for his role as Nightcrawler in the X-Men movies, Cumming tweeted, “I hate when people say they don’t have strong feelings about something then proceed to spew offensive and ignorant ones#jeremyirons.” ~Cassie Jasinski

I hate when “activists” don’t allow other people to have an opinion. It shows how not open they are to everyone having rights when their views oppose theirs.

Thank you Jeff I completely agree. Everyone has their own beliefs and opinions and everyone has that freedom. People shouldn’t be getting scrutinized for having a differing opinion, you can’t make everyone happy. I find now I can’t express my views without be attacked by others right away. And Jeremy shouldn’t have to apologize for expressing his views.

I think his comment wasn’t offensive if I read it correctly and maybe what it was intended. He was pointing out flaws in the law and how it can be exploited while at the same time saying “Living with another animal, whether it be a husband or a dog, is great,” he said, “It’s lovely to have someone to love … What it’s called doesn’t matter at all.”..exactly, it doesn’t matter. To each their own.
