John Travolta’s son dead at 16

By Alexandra Heilbron on January 3, 2009 | 66 Comments

John Travolta in 1994 with son Jett and wife Kelly PrestonJohn Travolta‘s son, Jett, 16, died yesterday while on vacation with his family in the Bahamas. Jett was the first born child of Travolta, 54, and his wife Kelly Preston, 46. Jett apparently suffered a seizure at their vacation home on Grand Bahama Island, said Michael Ossi, the family’s lawyer in a statement. The boy hit his head either on the bathtub or the toilet and was pronounced dead at Rand Memorial Hospital, though it’s not yet clear whether Jett fell as a result of a seizure or if he had a seizure after slipping or falling. According to police, Jett was found unconscious in the bathroom at around 10:00 a.m. by one of the Travolta’s two nannies. Jett’s parents, who are described as night owls by close friend Michael McDermott, were asleep at the time. An autopsy will be performed. Jett, who suffered from Kawasaki syndrome, had a history of seizures, according to Ossi. The couple also have an eight-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu.

The worst imaginable fear is to lose your children.. God Bless

  2. demigod • January 3, 2009 @ 6:02 PM

    God did not bless.

  3. Nancy • January 3, 2009 @ 6:22 PM

Kawasaki syndrome? Actually, he was autistic but his parents didn’t want to acknowledge or admit that (publicly or privately), because it went against their ‘Scientology beliefs’.

  4. tributegirl • January 3, 2009 @ 9:51 PM

They are Scientologists? I didn’t know that. I read that he had been tested for autism but that there were no definite results. What a shame, I can’t imagine losing a child. God help them get through this tragedy.

John Travolta Is My Favorite Actor And Really Hurt When I Found Out A bout His Son! My Heart And Prayers Go Out To John And Kelly! God Bless You!

  6. Nancy • January 3, 2009 @ 10:35 PM

BIGTIME Scientologists!! I’m amazed John hasn’t jumped all over Oprah’s sofa too!!

  7. roflmao • January 3, 2009 @ 11:34 PM

    well if they’re scientologists,
why hasn’t anyone thought that MAYBE
    JUST MAYBE,
    the scientologists did it?
they don’t approve of things like mental illnesses anyway.

  8. Joshua • January 4, 2009 @ 12:42 AM

A 16 Year old boy is dead now, some of the comments here make me sick. Have some respect. So they are Scientologists, SO WHAT. Dosnt give you the right to come on here and unsult these people just after they lose something so precious. Rest in peace Jett Travolta.

  9. mandee • January 4, 2009 @ 12:48 AM

soo sorry to hear. RIP, god bless your family, i hope you find the strength and courage to survive this.

  10. Anonymous • January 4, 2009 @ 1:06 AM

maybe people should have more respect a family just lost a loved one and all people can say is oh they were scientologists. grow up people God forbid any of you have something happen to one of your family members. Would u appreciate it if someone randomly said they didnt care bc of the families beliefs? last time I checked having your own beliefs or your own opinion is what we call living in a free country. GROW UP!!!

  11. Mitch • January 4, 2009 @ 1:24 AM

    To John, Kelley and Ella….
My condolences. Sorry for your loss.

  12. Nancy • January 4, 2009 @ 2:43 AM

Well Anonymous….you should re-read your comment because I live in a ‘free country’ too and I only stated MY OWN opinion and beliefs. Maybe you should GROW UP!!! Also, just because I didn’t write my condolences on here or say “God bless”, please don’t insinuate that I “don’t care”!

As for you Joshua, “So they are Scientologists, SO WHAT”……..you should really GOOGLE and read up on this ‘Scientology’ before you start spewing “SO WHAT”!!

  13. r0ckst4r • January 4, 2009 @ 3:59 AM

In response to Nancy claim that Jett was autistic: Actually, he wasn’t. He did suffer from Kawasaki disease, which is immeasurably different from autism in many ways. Kawasaki disease develops from a fever and causes skin rashes/peeling in early stages. Also, Kawasaki disease affects the organs in the body (mostly the heart) while autism affects the brain. Austism and Kawasaki disease have almost nothing in common except for the fact that scientists no very little about both diseases. So the fact that John and Kelly “didn’t want to acknowledge” his supposed autism had nothing to do with their beliefs in Scientology. It was because he wasn’t autistic. And because Kawasaki disease is primarily found in Japan and not the US his parents most likely tested him for autism long before testing him for Kawasaki disease.

  14. J.Turner • January 4, 2009 @ 8:28 AM

My heart goes out to his parents. They deserve privacy and prayers.

  15. tributegirl • January 4, 2009 @ 2:00 PM

Yeah, Nancy, don’t “unsult” people! lmao!
Anyway, Joshua and anonymous, no one said they didn’t care because of the families beliefs, and when is saying they are scientologists an INsult? It isn’t, it was just part of the conversation, so take your holier-than-thou attitude and shove it. I am sorry that these people lost their child, I can’t imagine anything worse than that, but I certainly was NOT insulting them or saying I didn’t care.

  16. Sylvia • January 4, 2009 @ 2:09 PM

Tribute girl, I see no one pointing it at you, so you took it that way, with your own holier than thou attitude.

In regards to what others said, yes we live in a free country, and as such we are all entitled to our own opinions and beliefs and same so with religion. It doesn’t matter what ailment the child had, the only thing that matters is that he died and the parents are mourning the loss of a child.

As far as them being scientologists, what does anyone’s beliefs have anything to do with the death of their child? Seriously, if you lost a child and the only thing people commented about you was that you were Christian or Catholic (or any other religion) you would be upset and rightly so. So Joshua is right in his comment, so what. So what was as to their religion. Offer your condolenses for their lose and move on. It doesn’t matter how much or how little someone knows about another’s religion, just that it has no place in the current discussion.

  17. tributegirl • January 4, 2009 @ 2:18 PM

Nice try, Sylvia, but two of us were discussing Scientology, and Joshua and anonymous talked about those of us who were discussing Scientology as if we were discussing it in a derrogatory way. Yes, I agree, they were Scientologists, and that’s no big deal, it has nothing to do with what they are suffering right now, but it’s also no big deal for other people to discuss Scientology. I agree that all that matters is that a child died, but that doesn’t mean that is all that people can discuss. And “discuss” is the key word here, no one was “insulting” Scientology, we were simply “discussing” it. No one was pointing anything at you either, so what’s the problem?

  18. Jo-Anne. • January 4, 2009 @ 3:44 PM

I was going to jump in earlier, but I knew in time many others would echo the same sentiments.

r0ckst4r, very good point, well said. Joshua, Anonymous, J.T. and Sylvia, well said too. I couldn’t figure out why Scientology was even brought up or mentioned, as someone here once pointed out (very rudely) more than once to me, t.g., “stick to the topic”….

What on earth does this have to do with this tragedy? And to even bring up the “couch jump” at this time, incredibly poor taste.

Let those close to this family grieve in whatever way they choose. But for God’s sake, have some compassion and put your tasteless comments aside.

  19. tributegirl • January 4, 2009 @ 5:13 PM

Yup, I knew it was only a matter of time before Jo would be here jumping on the bandwagon. Hey Jo, we’ve missed ya on the Paris article, hint hint.
So anyway, we were discussing the Travolta tragedy, the loss of their beloved son, which I do have great compassion for, John Travolta is one of my all time favorite actors, I think very highly of him. A comment on here mentioned his son’s condition, and the possibility of another condition being swept under the rug because of their Scientology beliefs. Thus, Scientology became part of the conversation on here. Thus, we WERE sticking to the topic, JA. And I do believe that it was you who very rudely told me and many others to stick to the topic, when you just couldn’t do it yourself. I also believe that YOU were the one who was not going to comment to me anymore, what happened to that promise, Jo?
For the record, I was staying on topic, did not say anything negative about Scientology as I believe that negative comments (like the one above this one) are completely unnecessary and out of place in an article such as this.

  20. Nancy • January 4, 2009 @ 6:00 PM

Well r0ckst4r, neither you or I know FOR SURE, we can only speculate. For the record though, Kawasaki disease also leads to inflammation of the blood vessels in kids….hmmm…I’m sure there are blood vessels going to and from the brain, wouldn’t you say? Anyways, if you click on my blue name for this comment, at least I have the New York Post to back up my claim and the Travolta’s did deny the claim through their lawyer but never took any legal action…hmmm…one would think that while the lawyer is already involved in a so-called false claim, that that same lawyer would persuade the Travolta’s to seek restitution in the form of a retraction in the New York Post!!

As for you Jo Anne…..stop kissing @$$!! For once in your life!

  21. demigod • January 4, 2009 @ 7:19 PM

Scientology was mentioned for the same reason ‘God’ was mentioned.

  22. tributegirl • January 4, 2009 @ 7:44 PM

THANK YOU DEMIGOD!!! Finally (as Jo would say) someone gets it, someone finally gets it!

  23. demigod • January 4, 2009 @ 8:19 PM

    lol

  24. mandee • January 4, 2009 @ 9:16 PM

i feel very sorry for this family, and even if jett DID have autism, its not like its a big deal. its not like that is the REASON behind his death. and i know nothing about scientology, except that it makes tom cruise a psycho. lol. so i do disagree with it, and i completely understand that everyone has their own right and beliefs on scientology. i dont see why anyone should be saying rude things, or starting a fight over someone discussing their views on scientology, death, or anything. i could understand someone in scientology deciding they would jump in to defend their beliefs, but to bring up other religions? a religion is very often something YOU CHOOSE. so its not like they are bashing something that is in no way anyones fault here. people need to mind their own business when there is 2 ADULTS discussing anything on here.

  25. mandee • January 4, 2009 @ 9:24 PM

oh and i also just read that page u sent us to, nancy. and i completely disagree with the article. my niece is only 12 and she is considered severely autistic EXCEPT that we made her learn how to speak. we refused to believe she was never going to speak, so we didnt let her get away with just making noises and pointing. she also has adhd and bipolar. she can read, she can play, she can do sports, she can do whatever she WANTS to do. people have a lot of misconceptions of autistic people. it is a disability, but they are capable of learning, and living like a normal human being. except that my nieces brain works on a 4 year old level, but she can read, she can write, she can understand some stuff, although not EVERYTHING. she doesnt understand things like, why if she kicks a table it wont hurt the table, but if she kicks you it does hurt. she cant tell the difference sometimes between inanimate objects and real ones. anyways, no point bashing autism, or acting like its something to be ashamed of if your family, or kids have autism. they are just people too, and it doesnt make you love them any less.

  26. Nancy • January 4, 2009 @ 11:58 PM

But, I never said I agree with the article….it just backs up my claim that’s all. I don’t know anyone with either autism or Kawasaki disease, so I don’t know the symptoms myself and never claimed to. I just feel that if their son did not have autism that they would have fought for a retraction in the New York Post and, if he did have autism, they should have at least acknowledged it no matter what their religion. I understand that there are alot of different religions out there but I personally, DO NOT agree with ANY religion that causes harm to other human beings. My opinion of THAT will never change! Anyways, yes, it must be hard to lose a child. I couldn’t imagine their pain.

  27. mandee • January 5, 2009 @ 12:20 PM

oh, i was never implying that you said anything about agreeing with the article, or really saying anything bad about religions at all. i disagree with any religion that will not help people when they need it, or does things that can harm them. i wasnt saying that i think it was wrong for you or anyone to be talking about, or stating what you think or feel about scientology, since it is related to this article, its still on topic and i agree completely with stating any good or bad opinions about it because it is in the article. i know the few things ive personally heard of scientology, it makes me wonder how people can be soo stupid and simply choose to believe in that kind of crap. im just saying, lol the article is wrong in so many ways.

  28. ke • January 5, 2009 @ 1:59 PM

mandee, i think you might be contradicting yourself. in both your statements, you said how little you know personally of Scientology yet you speak of it with judgment and condescension. “”it makes me wonder how people can be soo stupid and simply choose to believe in that kind of crap.”” you say this after admitting that the only thing you know about it is that it makes tom cruise crazy? and yes, there are many ‘if-y’ (?) things about Scientology, like how they supposedly refuse patients drugs that might relieve their pain from whatever procedure/illness, I myself don’t know all that much, but haven’t we learned that a lot of the time, things are either taken out of proportion or be entirely fabricated? i think people jump the gun too often about things they don’t know. there’s nothing wrong about having an opinion of something obviously, I’m a little if-y about Scientology too, but it just doesn’t sound right when people leave comments calling others ‘stupid’ for believing in a religion that is ‘crap’. that’s harsh, unfeeling and ignorant.

  29. ke • January 5, 2009 @ 2:01 PM

anyway, this is so incredibly sad for this family. losing someone so close and right after the new year, too, i can’t even imagine. I hope they get through this just fine.

  30. r0ckst4r • January 5, 2009 @ 3:38 PM

Nancy, you bring up some good points. If Jett did suffer from autism, why did the Travolta’s ask for a retraction from the NY Post? However, that NY Post article was built on comments given by a magazine editor who has interviewed John Travolta many times. This person isn’t claiming Jett had autism, just that he was disabled in some way. That disability could easily by Kawasaki disease OR autism. I agree that we will probably never know for sure and can only speculate. But it seems to me that the chances of Jett suffering from autism are just as great as the chances that he was suffering from Kawasaki disease. I sincerely believe that if Jett really did autism his parents would have done everything in their power to help their son. No parents would intentionally cause harm to their own children. I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt here.

  31. Joshua • January 5, 2009 @ 3:48 PM

I would like to try and stop this silly argument if i can. I was just stating my opinion as too reading comments that made me sick to read. I wasnt pointing fingers. SO the question so…do you think what you said was rude? You are allowed to have an oppinion as you stated just as i am entitled. once again RIP Jett.

  32. Jo-Anne. • January 5, 2009 @ 4:02 PM

demigod, curious….explain to me what you mean by Scientology being mentioned cuz “God” was mentioned (by first posted comment)? I do not get it, but would like to understand your meaning?

I assume first comment was Anonymous’ belief in God, asking for blessing for this tragedy.

What does John and Kelly’s belief in Scientology have to do with the above article? I still do not get it – enlighten me thanks!

  33. tributegirl • January 5, 2009 @ 6:36 PM

    Not possible.
Anyway, demigod didn’t say that Scientology was mentioned “cuz” God was mentioned, demigod said that Scientology was mentioned “for the same reason” God was mentioned. It’s people’s thoughts and opinions on the topic.

  34. Nancy • January 5, 2009 @ 8:08 PM

    YOU GO GIRL!! 😛

  35. mandee • January 5, 2009 @ 11:57 PM

ke – i said i dont know MUCH about it. i did read how katie wasnt allowed pain killers or to make any noise while giving birth, i also read how they wouldnt let her have her baby for the first 24 hrs of her life. i have read a lot of things, and i simply stated that i think its stupid, as i would think any religion that HARMS or DENYS people any type of help, including medical help/medicine. i dont see how im contradicting myself in anyway actually. and i was wrong when i said i know NOTHING about it except that it makes tom crazy, but in a way, i also wasnt. given the fact that everything ive ever heard about scientology was directly based on something tom cruise said or did, and things that have to do with katie holmes. so, i put it as simply as i could, instead of writing out all my reasonings for thinking it was a stupid religion.

  36. Anonymous • January 6, 2009 @ 12:27 AM

um i have to say you guys are being really rude a family just lost there child and you trash the article with religion and your fights? it has nothing yo do with jett dying if he had autism and his parents didn’t say because there religion because they didn’t want the world to know thats there choice i still believe they where good parents and just suffered a great loss and nancy to make fun of a man who just lost there son thats really cold R.I.P jett

  37. Anonymous • January 6, 2009 @ 12:29 AM

im mean to not yo and his not there

  38. mandee • January 6, 2009 @ 1:02 AM

yep we are completely off the topic of autism, and i have every right to state what i think about scientology, since it is related to this article. also, no one said it makes this death less important, and pretty much everyone already said how sad they are for the travoltas loss. if you dont like what the adults are discussing on an article, then perhaps you shouldnt read every single comment? it is still based on the article itsself, because it is about their personal beliefs. also, i am pretty sure the travoltas do NOT come on here to read what others have to say about his death, and even if they did, it wont be well into the future when they are over the shock and initial blow of losing one of their children. that comment totally TOTALLY reeks of JO !

  39. Nancy • January 6, 2009 @ 1:25 AM

“im mean to not yo and his not there”

    WTF?
Ok, so I’m “cold” for bringing up the possibility of John Travolta jumping on Oprah’s sofa…big whoop! At least I have the guts to stand up and tell the world that I don’t approve and never will approve, of anything involving Scientology! That’s my opinion…don’t like it? Want to call me “cold”…so be it, that’s your opinion. I said it must be hard losing a child and that I can’t imagine their pain, what more do you want from me? I’m not going to lay down and bawl my eyes out! I’ve never been a fan of either John or Kelly. Yes, I feel for them for their loss but I also feel for all the victims of Scientology too!

  41. demigod • January 6, 2009 @ 4:06 AM

    What t.g. said 🙂

  42. Jo-Anne. • January 6, 2009 @ 9:11 AM

I was hoping to hear demigod’s response to my question as it was directed at him/her…however I still stand completely by what I said and the “explanation” is weak.

You all brought scientology into this for no reason at all, except to poke fun at this grieving family, which to me (and I speak for me alone) is disgraceful. Same comment as I made originally, NO justification at all in referring to their religion or the “couch jump” in this story line…very inappropriate, not funny.

  43. Nancy • January 6, 2009 @ 9:53 AM

I wasn’t trying to be funny. John and Kelly ARE scientologists so it was always there and when giving MY OPINION, I just brought it into light. If you don’t like that then too bad! This is exactly what the majority of people on here INCLUDING MYSELF have been talking about…we give our opinions (not referring to or bashing you), and you come back with a personal attack saying that I am “poking fun at this grieving family”, it “is disgraceful”, there is “NO justification for it at all”, “very inappropriate”, “poor taste”, “tasteless comments”. You just don’t get it…it’s called RESPECT and funny thing is, that when you give it…YOU GET IT BACK!!

  44. Jo-Anne. • January 6, 2009 @ 10:04 AM

in my opinion, your comment was in poor taste

  45. Anonymous • January 6, 2009 @ 5:38 PM

Even the newslines are all talking about their link with Scientology, and the possibility that Jett had autism but their Scientology beliefs would not accept the diagnosis. So if the rest of the world can talk about it, why can’t we? I don’t think any of the Travolta family are going to come on this site and read these comments and be broken hearted about them, they’ve got bigger things on their plate than our comments..

  46. mandee • January 6, 2009 @ 6:03 PM

thanks im glad to read your comment! it just proves that people can still be open minded, and understand where the rest of us are coming from. 🙂

  47. tributegirl • January 7, 2009 @ 9:37 AM

Most people on here are open minded, unfortunately we have some closed minded people here too, but whatever, it takes all kinds.
That’s right, I’ve seen different news shows and whenever they talk about Jett’s death, Scientology and autism keep coming up in discussion. The Travoltas can go by whatever religion they choose, but we are all free to discuss it if WE choose. And mandee and anonymous are right, I highly doubt that John and Kelly are going to come on this site, and stress over what WE are saying!

you accuse me of stuff and then I SIMPLY ask you to explain – yet you NEVER, NEVER EVER back it up.

mandee tells me to shut up and then proceeds to say no one was talking to me in her next post – what is that? it’s so blatantly untrue.

You are right about one thing, this site should be fun, but you are doing everything in your power to make sure it isn’t. Not working though.
You talk about people being righteous, you should take a look in the mirror.
And every single time you have asked me to explain, I answered, every single time. Yet you continue to say “prove it, you didn’t prove it”. Even after I did.
Yeah, you have problems, and unless a good psychiatrist comes on this site, or you finally clue in and go see one yourself, I don’t see any improvement in your future.
Jeez, I even said some nice things to you, and how did you respond? You didn’t. I think you didn’t quite know how to handle it, so you kept quiet. Nice. Real mature, Jo.

  55. mandee • January 8, 2009 @ 11:26 PM

and maybe the next time youre joking, you should consider joking without being RUDE and ignorant and then everyone would be on the same wave length as you. and i said, no one was directly talking to you, and you started so i told you to shut up. then nancy spoke, then you started up again. so thats why i said no one was even talking to you.
