John Wick available Feb 3 on Blu-ray/DVD

In the new DVD release John Wick, the title character, played by Keanu Reeves, receives a posthumous gift from his wife. It’s a puppy named Daisy, and his wife leaves a letter saying Daisy is to help give John, who’s a bit of a loner, some companionship as he grieves. A retired underworld assassin, John grows fond of Daisy and begins to take her everywhere, even letting her sleep in his bed.
Soon after, he’s approached at a gas station while filling up his vintage Mustang. There’s an unsavory looking group of young men, and one of them, Iosef, asks how much John wants for his car. John tells the punk it’s not for sale. It’s clear Iosef, who turns out to be the son of Russian mob boss Viggo Tarasov, is riled by the fact that John paid him no deference. That night, Iosef and his pals break into John’s house, rough him up and take the car. But worst of all, they sadistically kill Daisy. John snaps and decides he has to return to his old ways to make the thugs pay for taking Daisy’s life.
Iosef didn’t realize who John is, and when he takes the car to a shop to have it altered, the owner, Aurelio (John Leguizamo) declines, knowing who the car really belongs to. When Iosef’s father, Viggo finds out his son stole John’s car, he’s irate and more than a bit panicked. Despite being retired, John is still a feared man in the underworld and Viggo realizes Iosef is marked for death by his idiotic actions. In an effort to protect his son, Viggo contacts John, begging him not to seek retribution, but John declines. Viggo sends men to kill John, but the ex-assassin goes into full out attack mode and sets out to take down Iosef.
Keanu Reeves does an incredible job portraying a wounded widower who wants to set things right by making a man evil enough to kill an innocent puppy pay for his crimes. This gets the audience rooting for him because he’s not after anyone just for kicks – these are bad men and he wants to rid the world of their evil.
You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat as John fights his way through an underground network of assassins and criminals, coming close many times to losing his battle. The action sequences are choreographed to perfection – Keanu moves easily through crowds of criminals trying to kill him, taking each one down with precision.
