Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, continues to break box office records in its second weekend. Dropping only 43% from last weekend, it earned an additional $55 million for a two-week total of $192.7 million, making it the biggest second weekend ever for a film in October, a record previously held by Gravity with $43.2 million in 2013. Last weekend, the film broke the October opening weekend record set last year by Venom, and also marked a career-best opening for director Todd Phillips, and was Joaquin Phoenix’s biggest opening weekend ever.
Debuting in second place was the animated feature The Addams Family, based on the eccentric cartoons by Charles Addams. Outperforming expectations, it earned $30.3 million in 4,007 theaters.
Paramount’s Gemini Man, which was shot at an amazing 120 frames per second and stars Will Smith as both a retired assassin and his young clone, took third place at the box office, debuting in over 3,600 theaters with $20.5 million.
Dropping two spots to fourth place was the animated film Abominable, which earned an additional $6.2 million for a three-week total of $48 million.
Rounding out the top five was Downton Abbey, which dropped two spots, but took in another $4.9 million for a four-week total of $82.7 million. The movie has done so well that a sequel is already being planned. Click here to see our Downton Abbey filming locations photo gallery. ~May Wong
