Kevin Smith addresses The Southwest issue exclusively to Tribute

Kevin Smith has not had it easy over the last few weeks. At a time when he should be joyously promoting his new film, Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan – Smith is saddened by the turn of events after tweeting about getting booted off a Southwest airlines for being overweight when he was told that he would not fit in a regular seat. Almost immediately after his first “tweet” (Smith has over 1-million followers on twitter), the story was picked up by TMZ.com and then things began to turn ugly.

At a recent press junket to promote the Cop Out, Smith cancelled all of his scheduled TV interviews, but granted only one to Tribute, to address the issue and talk about the film. Smith said that the media outcry over the airline incident had been terrible at times and that all they could talk about was the fact that he was overweight. Even though he tried to make light of the incident there is no doubt that he was deeply offended and hurt and is now self conscience about the way he looks.

Kevin Smith is still standing by the fact that he was not too fat to fly on Southwest Airlines but just that some person working for the airline didn’t like him and decided to pick on him. He said they won’t tell him who made the decision to boot him off the flight and said that there was “nobody in charge”.

Tribute has the exclusive 20 minute interview with Kevin which you can watch below. He talks with Tribute’s Bonnie Laufer at length about the Southwest incident, directing a film for the first time from a script that he did not write, what it was REALLY like to work with action star Bruce Willis and much more.

WARNING: Smith uses colorful language throughout the interview – viewer discretion is advised.

I have the highest respect for Kevin Smith. He always speaks his mind, he always states his opinion without apologies, and he has the strongest sense of self of anyone that I can think of. It’s unfortunate that this has apparently blown up so much, but I side with Kev on this one.

I think he’s working up a sweat by talking so much… lol, he keeps rubbing his face/forehead.

I totally agree with Kevin but man, take off that f’in jacket and sweatshirt and just wear a t-shirt and you won’t sweat so much!

I still love what Craig Ferguson said about airlines not giving discounts for people that are skinny and take up less of a seat lol. I agree with Kevin and honestly don’t think any one deserves to be singled out for their weight, weather they are too skinnny or overweight. But Kevin makes a great point, the issue is about customer service and these days I think that is a lost art practiced by very few companies. I am in the media world and I also hate the angle people choose to cover on this.

Really Kevin? You had already bought two seats for the earlier flight! You KNEW you needed two seats and YOU thought it would be okay to take up your seat and a part of someone else’s seat!!! I’m a chunk myself and I would NEVER assume it would be okay to take something away from someone else because I wanted it for myself! You thought you could just SQUEEZE into 1 seat just THIS TIME??? thats just rude on your part…not on the airlines part… by the way… do you get a refund on your extra seats when you buy on southwest???
