Kick-Ass 2 star Jim Carrey denounces film’s violence

Jim Carrey has publicly condemned the excessive violence in the upcoming Kick-Ass 2, based on the comic book series by Mark Millar. The 51-year-old actor, who plays vigilante Colonel Stars and Stripes in the upcoming sequel to 2010’s Kick-Ass, took to Twitter yesterday to apologize for his involvement in the R-rated film. He tweeted, “I did Kick-Ass 2 a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence. My apologies to others involve[d] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.“ In defense of the film, Millar wrote a lengthy response on his blog, which included the following: “Ultimately, this is his decision, but I’ve never quite bought the notion that violence in fiction leads to violence in real-life any more than Harry Potter casting a spell creates more Boy Wizards in real-life. Our job as storytellers is to entertain and our toolbox can’t be sabotaged by curtailing the use of guns in an action-movie. Imagine a John Wayne picture where he wasn’t packing or a Rocky movie where Stallone wasn’t punching someone repeatedly in the face. Our audience is smart enough to know they’re all pretending and we should instead just sit back and enjoy the serotonin release of seeing bad guys meeting bad ends as much as we enjoyed seeing the Death Star exploding.” Kick-Ass 2 hits theaters on August 16. ~Alfonso Espina

Love Jim Carrey. I support him trying to stop the violence. However, the movie is just entertainment. I love action/horror movies. The more killing the better. Watching them don’t make me evil. If you’re evil, you’re just born evil. Jim was paid for the movie and it’s in his contract to promote it. It’s wrong of him to not promote the movie just because he had a change of heart. He took the money so, he should live up to the agreement. Maybe he should donate the money to charities.
I support Mr. Carrey’s decision whole heartedly! Theres many studies showing the effects that this has on people. Why would you condone Stalone hitting someone in the face repeatedly?? Yes, we know its pretending, so why not get him to hit him in the face once or twice instead of repeatedly?? If its not real why have those type of movies in the 1st place. Its sickening for me to see and hear a 15 year child, in a preview saying: do you want to play? It really is bad enough for a man to say that, when it doesn’t have anything to do with playing!
Maybe he should denounce his paycheck.
Gotta say, I love Mark Millar’s response. It’s awesome and I completely agree with him.
While his reasoning is solid, I have to question what has changed since he signed on to do it, read the script, showed up for x amount of days of shooting, etc…. Sorry but something seems disingenuous about the motives of denouncing this. There is more here but seems like Jim needs to have a reason that makes it inarguable. I don’t buy it
I don’t get the reference to Harry Potter. Does he think that if Harry Potter fans could be wizards they wouldn’t choose to be? Heck yeah they would. So that reasoning doesn’t make sense to me. That means fans of violence would probably indulge in violence, if you look at it that way. Kudos to Carrey. More actors should stand up to the studios who are putting out harmful material.
Good GOD!!! I am sick of people trying to be ” holier than thou” about violence in movies and the so called influence it had or has on society. If you choose to be violent your going to be violent not based on a movie that you have seen. If you can’t separate entertainment from reality or if you are a parent and you can’t teach your kids that, then don’t watch movies. Love Jim Carey since the days of ILC but he got paid to do this…he should not take the money if he feels this way because ethics would make a person not take the money but the fact that he still got paid to do it that just makes him a hypocrite.
