If you want to save sharks, now is your chance to help the cause. Sharkwater director Rob Stewart and supporters will speak to Toronto City Council about why they should ban the sale of shark fins tomorrow (Friday, September 9) morning at 9:00 am. If you want to have your say, click here to sign the petition and ask Toronto mayor Rob Ford to support the ban.

Yesterday in California, Bill AB376 passed in the state Senate to ban the sale of shark fins, to the delight of Leonardo DiCaprio, who campaigned for the bill and urged his fans to help. Other high profile supporters of the shark fin ban include Edward NortonIan Somerhalder, Ke$ha, Kristen Bell, Ben Stiller, Scarlett JohanssonMichael Vartan, Megan FoxPaul Rudd, Yao Ming, Ang Lee and Gordon Ramsay. In addition to California; Saipan, Guam, Oregon and Hawaii have also banned the sale and consumption of shark fins, and Brantford, Ontario is the first Canadian city to pass a ban on the soup. In Saipan and Guam, school children petitioned their governments to ban shark fins after watching Sharkwater.

Watch the video below to hear from Rob Stewart why he and the United Conservationists want you to join in the fight to save sharks, our environment and people around the world by putting a stop to shark finning, as well as Yao Ming and Ang Lee’s WildAid PSAs addressing shark fin soup and Gordon Ramsay’s video about the “wasteful cruel practice” of shark finning. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Good. It’s not worth it to kill part of the food chain just for a fin and make soup. It’s the same as killing an elephant for a tusk and leaving it there to rot. Truly, there are other foods out there let’s not try and find new foods/delecacies that are really moronic to make. Pass the law world wide.
Start eating jellyfish then. I hear jellyfish will put lead in your pencil, spring in your step and hair on your chest..oh and if you’re lucky it might kill you back.

I applaud these celebrities for using their influence to stop the use of shark fins. With all of the food options available, it makes no sense to decimate an animal species solely to obtain a body part for soup. Bravo to Leonardo DiCaprio, Gordon Ramsay, Ang Lee, Yao Ming, et. al for having the courage to speak out against shark fin soup. Extra kudos to DiCaprio for using his fame to support positive political action in California. I hope many more people jump on this bandwagon.

I am quite somewhere around the corner in China, someone is selling fake sharp-fin soup ! If we could not stop the castration of sharp for their fins, the government could force the sharp fin eater to pay for a replacement of the sharp fin with an artificial one.

It is an absolutely barbaric practice. How would they like to have their arms and legs cut off and their torso tossed away to die a slow and horrible death.

Why is Ramsay pissed that they would reuse the body of the shark for bait? Better than throwing it back in to the water. And yea, people do use other parts of the shark for things like their cartilage. Those fisherman on the boat slit the sharks throat as soon as they got a chance, how is that the most cruel thing he’s ever seen?

This is some real high profile celebrity pressure/scare tactics, those poor restaurant owners have no choice but to agree or be shamed by the rest of the “classy, moral” persons in the room.
