Leslie Mann discusses This is 40 with Tribute

By Tribute on March 21, 2013 | 2 Comments

Our phone interview with Leslie Mann is exactly how you would imagine a typical conversation would be like with Debbie, Mann’s character in This is 40. Three similarities about Leslie and Debbie are that they are both passionately caring mothers, both are very relatable and both are a bunch of laughs. The outrageously funny movie follows Debbie and Pete (Paul Rudd) as they struggle to keep their marriage exciting while also balancing business, pleasure, family and many surprising expenses. Tribute spoke briefly with the busy actress.

Did you have to watch the movie again before doing a new set of interviews?
Umm…Hey Judd…Can you…hold on one sec (pause)…hi, sorry, did I have to watch it before these interviews? I didn’t, but I remember it very well (laughs).

That’s good! What was your favorite part of the movie?
My favorite part of the movie was…oh, I have an echo…I love the whole movie! It was fun watching my kids. It was fun watching Iris be so funny and Maude, kind of understanding in a different way how acting works, this time around and watching them grow and learning about the family business. That was fun, that was really fun.

Was it awkward listening to your kids use profanities?
Yeah, I didn’t like that. I really didn’t. Judd thinks that’s super funny for some reason. I think it worked for the scene where Maude gets really upset. I think it works well, but I don’t love that.

Will they be working on any other movies, with or without you and Judd?
No, I’d like them to wait until they finish school and then they can do whatever they want, but while they’re little kids and in school, I think they should just focus on their homework and being regular kids. I think that the child actor thing scares me a little bit.

What is the most embarrassing thing that happened to you on set of This is 40?
You know what’s weird? It’s not that kind of environment. It’s not the environment where you get embarrassed about things because everybody is doing such crazy shit all the time and people are just so free to express themselves in any way they want that there really isn’t a lot of judgment. So, maybe if an outsider came in, it would be embarrassing, but because it’s a very safe, open environment for all of us to just express ourselves in any way we want, it doesn’t feel like anything is off limits or embarrassing or like we’re being judged. It feels very safe.

What kind of scenes do you think would be in a movie titled This is 50?
Oh Gosh, I don’t know! Wait till I’m 50 (laughs), why are you rushing things?! I don’t know, when I’m 50 I’ll answer that question, but I don’t even want to know what that’s like yet.

This is 40 will be released on Blu-ray/DVD—also features deleted, extended and altered scenes and so much more—on March 22, 2013.~Renita Naraine
