Mariah Carey officially joins American Idol

Following weeks of speculation, Mariah Carey has officially signed on for Season 12 of American Idol. The announcement was made Monday by Fox’s entertainment president Kevin Reilly on a panel at the Television Critic’s Association Summer Press Tour. Though Carey couldn’t be at the panel to make the announcement herself, she shared her excitement with the audience via phone when Reilly called her and put her on speaker. “As a singer, songwriter and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with American Idol,” Carey said.
American Idol Season 12 will return January 2013. It is unknown how long Carey will remain with the show, but executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told audiences at TCA Summer Press Tour that he could see having new judges on the panel every year of the series. Simon Fuller, creator and executive producer of the show, concluded by saying, “We are proud to have one of the world’s greatest-ever female singers join our show. Mariah defines the word ‘Idol’ and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her.” ~Isabelle Khoo
