Mark Rylance wants to be a female Bond

By Tribute on July 7, 2016 | 9 Comments

Mark Rylance at the Premiere of The BFGWith Daniel Craig telling Time Out London that he’d rather “slit his wrists” than do another James Bond movie, it looks about time for a new handsome Englishman to try his hand at playing the suave, martini-drinking spy.

Rumors have been swirling as to who will replace Daniel, with Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, Jamie Bell and Aidan Turner as just a few of the many names in contention for the license to kill.

Now Oscar-winner Mark Rylance has decided to throw his hat into the Bond ring — but not for the role you’d think.

“Only if it’s Jane Bond. If they decide to have a woman, then I’ll go up for that,” The BFG star said in a recent interview with the Daily Mail.

But Mark isn’t the only candidate in the running, as Gillian Anderson has also expressed her interest in playing Ms. Bond. The X-Files actress recently tweeted out a fan-generated poster of her as the next Bond with the caption “Bond. Jane Bond.”

While fans and the media are keen to voice their opinions, they shouldn’t jump the gun too soon. According to Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes, it’s all up to casting director Barbara Broccoli.

“The truth is, and here’s the headline — it’s not a democracy, it’s not the X Factor, it’s not the EU referendum, it’s not a public vote,” he clarified at the Hay Festival in May. “[Barbara] chooses who’s going to be the next Bond: end of story. Without that, there would be no Daniel Craig because public support for Daniel was zero.”

“I can guarantee whatever happens with it,” he continued, “it will not be what you expect. That’s what she’s been brilliant at, and that’s how it’ll survive.”

Would you be interested in seeing a female Bond? If so, who would be the perfect actress (or actor) to play her? Let us know in the comments!

“Ian Fleming’s Jane Bond?” Ian Fleming didn’t create Jane Bond.

I could see Kate Winslet being a great Bond.

I vaguely remember they tried to make a series called Mrs. Columbo in the late seventies. Columbo starring Peter Falk (then in his fifties) was a hit, so eight years later they launched a show supposedly about his wife (in her early 20s), who was also a detective, despite the fact that whenever he talked about her in his show, she was a matronly middle-aged wife with no interest in crime or mysteries. Needless to say, it bombed. They should try having a female spy and don’t have it have anything to do with Bond. Mrs. Columbo might have worked if it hadn’t tried to ride on Columbo’s coattails and been called something else.

I think this is brilliant. A female Bond is a great idea, and it’s even better if a man were to play the part. Keep spinning those traditional ways on their heads!

    Jennifer Garner

First female Ghostbusters, now possibly Jane Bond? I agree with Snepts, Ian Fleming didn’t write that. Idris Elba all the way! He can be cool and suave and intimidating if needed. Mind you, unlike past Bonds, he might stand out in a crowd.

If a female Bond was actually a good idea… Keira Knightley. Enough said.

Amber Lynn already played Jane Bond back in the 1980s.

Well, I think that a James Bond movie should be with a man. It just wouldn’t be the same. These movies have been going on since the 60’s if I’m not mistaken. I think if you put in a female the movies wouldn’t last very long. I liked all the Bond’s but for some reason Daniel Craig really turned me on as a Bond.I REALLY hate to see him go!!! I think if someone wants to make a movie with a female to be on the order of a Bond movie would be good but not to replace him.— If the female makes a good go of it then later they could meet up in a James Bond movie….hoping you would find a great James Bond!!
