Martin Sheen calls son Charlie’s addiction “a form of cancer”

By Alexandra Heilbron on February 24, 2011 | 22 Comments

During a visit to Europe to promote their new film, The Way, Charlie Sheen‘s father, Martin Sheen, 70, and older brother, Emilio Estevez, 48, talked to Sky News about their troubled family member, with Martin comparing what Charlie, 45, is going through to cancer. “He’s an extraordinary man,” said Martin. “If he had cancer, how would we treat him? This disease of addiction is a form of cancer. You have to have an equal measure of concern and love and lift him up. So that’s what we do for him.” Charlie is reportedly the world’s highest paid television star for his role on the hit TV series Two and a Half Men, but has become a tabloid staple due to his excessive lifestyle that includes drugs and hookers. He was admitted to hospital recently after a night of excessive partying.

I feel sorry for Martin that he raised such a screw up, but to compare this cretin’s weakness for prostitutes and drugs to cancer is an insult to people who actually have cancer. It’s not comparable. Cancer patients can’t stop having cancer at will. It’s not a choice. But I understand why Martin would be feeling pretty sick about the pathetic waste of space that he brought into the world.

Maybe Martin’s attitude (“My poor son, he’s got something like cancer, oh we have to love him”) is exactly why he raised a spoiled, selfish brat who is more interested in bjs from hookers than in spending time with his kids.

Yah, I have to agree comparing Charlie Sheen’s behaviour to having cancer certainly wasn’t a selling point here. It would be more productive and helpful if Martin and his family started going to some Alanon meetings. They would learn new ways to help Charlie without enabling his behaviour.

Martin Sheen’s family is rich and famous, his son has a sickness. I think that is what he was trying to compare his sons illness too when he talked about his son having a cancer. I’m sure he did not mean to be insensitive to people who are living with cancer.
We sometimes jump on famous people for everything they say, when really you know they are human and can make mistakes in how they come across. Martin Sheen loves his son just like anyone else. And wants the best for him just like anyone else would for their children. People should not judge so quickly.

Agreed Darcy. No, nothing can completely excuse Charlie Sheen’s behaviour, but he is obviously dealing with some kind of mental and behavioural issues that need serious addressing. It doesn’t matter whether or not Charlie was raised well or not, he is afflicted by some kind of mental health problem, and mental health problems affect everyone, rich or poor, celebrity or not.

In fact, mental health problems affect millions of people and their families around the world, and yet it’s the least researched or funded disease. I understand why Martin is comparing Charlie’s illness to cancer, because we do have to treat mental illness as something we can see. It’s very difficult because it has to do with the person and their emotions and actions rather than something physical, like cancer, or a broken arm. But if you had cancer or a broken arm, you would go to the doctor and get treatment.

I admire Martin and his family for sticking by Charlie and supporting him instead of turning him away and being ashamed. It’s hard to deal with mental issues at any time, but they are also continually scrutinized by tabloids and the press. It’s so sad and unfortunate and I only wish the best for that family in the hopes that Charlie gets the treatment he needs.

What self-respecting man isn’t more interested in bjs from hookers than his boring kids? Don’t fault him for living the dream.

  7. Sol • February 24, 2011 @ 2:12 PM

And re Martin as a father – look at him with Emelio – you’d swear Marty loves him as much as his other, more famous, better looking son that actually carries his name – obviously he couldn’t possibly, but kudos for him for being so convincing.

  8. Johnny • February 24, 2011 @ 2:13 PM

Sol, you obviously don’t have children you moron. What are you 15 yrs old? Give me a break that comment is just insane!

  9. Nannie • February 24, 2011 @ 2:46 PM

I agree with the disease part, it is a disease of the brain and you do need to not enable, but with love, as it is a disease that affects the brain. Do you think anyone really wants to live like that, he is slowly dieing just like with cancer, but what the disease does to the brain makes it resistant to treatment or the ability to rationalize that intense treatment is needed. Alanon would be a good idea for all the people in the world who think someone wants to go through the pain his son is in or because they think he is spoiled, sadly his money gives him the ability to keep his disease going along with the pain and self hatred for having no control.

  10. Sol • February 24, 2011 @ 2:59 PM

Johnny – you obviously have never gotten bjs from hookers. If you’re more interested in little kids than that, well, someone should call the police on you now.

  11. redrover8 • February 24, 2011 @ 3:10 PM

actually emilio esteves does carry Martin Sheen’s name – his real one so that comment is also wrong – suggest that you maybe work on repairing your relationship with your father or son based on such bitterness against a person you don’t know

  12. Amanda • February 24, 2011 @ 3:36 PM

What makes any of you think he’s mentally ill? He’s morally ill for sure, but there’s been no one connected to him saying he has any kind of mental illness.

  13. Sol • February 24, 2011 @ 4:30 PM

Bitterness? Just making a little poke at the obviously less successful (though perhaps more balanced?) Sheen brother.

  14. Johnny • February 24, 2011 @ 5:32 PM

Sol, you are totally out of line. I like a good joke as much as the next guy but your comments on this post are out of line and uncalled for. Grow up.

  15. Darcy • February 24, 2011 @ 7:38 PM

Johnny do not waste your time replying to someone who has no brain! His comments about Charlie Sheen and his family make no sense. “Ignorance” is what I would call Sol’s opinions.

Sorry all, but addiction is just that. There is no way to sugar coat it….It is an illness.. I have lived with someone with addiction, for too long.. No matter what, we still will love them, we do not leave them, in the hope of someday..Just like Martin Sheen mentions”Cancer”… It is an illness, no matter how it plays out….Sad, but true:( I know he did not mean any less, towards Cancer victims)Maybe, he is lucky, and has not had someone close to him die from this… I have been there as well….Saying that, I feel no pity for Charlie, anymore, or countless other stars. Lyndsay Lohan comes to mind… simply because they have money and tons of support…places to go, (,while ignoring it all, taking everything for granted).. while I do not…I am just taking each day as it comes.., If only life were that simple…. I *do* feel for his children.. They are the true losers, at the end of the day…..I sadly see a sad demise for Charlie Sheen, soon…

  17. Patrica • February 25, 2011 @ 4:28 AM

If Charlie had cancer and refused treatment he would die and everyone around him would be very sad indeed. He doesn’t have cancer, he has a very serious drug/alcohol addiction coupled with expensive partying with hookers. I am not sure why the hookers other than they do drugs and he has someone he can do his coke/heroin with and yes have wild abandoned sex. Those are his addictions not cancer. His parents should have with his wife had him committed for long term care for his “cancer”. They should have taken him to court, froze his money so had nothing to party with. No self respecting hooker would party with someone with NO money, no drug dealer would give him drugs knowing he had no way to pay for them. Win Win and no judge would refuse his next of kin seeking to have him locked up and do his rehab where he would have NO choice but to get clean. That man is going to end up dead, or kill someone. I wonder what his parents X’s and the legal system would do about that. Sadly he is John Belushi waiting to happen and there’s a hooker out that who will tried for his death by feeding him his drugs. Sad but true.

  18. Patrica • February 25, 2011 @ 4:32 AM

Sol, for your information, Emilio Estevez is quite successful in his own right, he is an actor, great director/writer, he might not be making the big big money his brother does but he is as successful as he wants to be!

  19. bree • February 25, 2011 @ 8:39 AM

I think Emilio is even better looking than Charlie , maybe they should have him come on the show as charlie’s brother while Charlie is away somewhere , give him a great story line . i bet he’d do just as good as Charlie in the ratings if it was done right

  20. michael • February 28, 2011 @ 10:13 AM

    Hi
I am one that has battled cancer and addiction all at the same time. So those who say addiction is not like cancer. Please get more educated in it. or maybe you just have to be one that has lived it. addiction if not taken care of, will kill you. And I believe with all my heart the charlie is headed down that path. The road he is leading, he is killing every part of his body, with all the drinking and drugs, not to mention how much of what he is doing with hookers is protected so there you have the issue of possibly aids. His family really needs to step in and help him.

Chuck is a spoiled narcissistic selfish piece of crap who only cares about sex and partying. Good job Martin. Instead of buying a Bentley for someone truly in need or perhaps an injured wounded vet at Walter Reed instead he showers these gifts to these worthless porn star attention skanks. Why??? These hookers will sell you out to the media in a second. it’s funny when that happens the beta male Charlie Sheen starts whining. What the hell did you expect you shallow prick? They are self absornbed models, pornstars, etc….. I think what daddy should do his tell him with all his gifts and talents he should do more with his life than just f women. But yet people glorify and worship this pompous punk who even calls those losers who make more money than him…..great guy!
