Matt Reeves in negotiations to direct The Batman

Warner Bros.’ The Batman has found a new director. After Ben Affleck announced in late January that he could not direct, produce and star as Batman in the hero’s stand-alone movie, director Matt Reeves has been asked to take charge.
While it’s not official that Reeves, who previously directed the Planet of the Apes sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, has signed on to direct the movie, he is currently in talks.
Though this is Reeves’ first attempt at a comic book character-related film, the talented director is no stranger to big box office success. With successful films like Cloverfield in addition to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes to his credit, Matt definitely has the talent and technique to make this a successful film.
But just in case Matt decides this isn’t the film for him, Warner Bros. is reportedly slating two other directors as potential backups — most notably, Ridley Scott. But don’t get too excited, the director known for films like the Aliens franchise and Blade Runner has commented that he is not a big fan of superhero films, admitting: “I can’t believe in the thin, gossamer tight-rope of the non-reality of the situation of the superhero.”
But he has also said he could imagine Batman fitting into the world of Blade Runner. Scott has the ability to elevate the Batman franchise and take it in an interesting direction — should he want to, of course. In addition to Scott, 2013’s Evil Dead reboot director Fede Alvarez has also been mentioned as a potential backup. It would be interesting to see how a horror director would take on the broody hero.
After relinquishing his role as director, it can be assumed Ben Affleck is probably pleased that he can focus more attention on fine-tuning his performance of the beloved comic book hero in the highly-anticipated film. His concern that his performance could suffer if he took on too much is a valid one. “There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Ben said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require.”
Particularly after the criticism that followed the release of 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it seems Ben is concerned about ensuring this film will do the franchise justice. It’s worth noting that Ben still has a major role in the movie besides playing the part of the Caped Crusader — in addition to producing the film, he co-wrote the script with DC Films head Geoff Johns.

In any case where it is Reeves or Ridley , they have to co-direct with someone who directs the animated version to get it right.
He’s not in negotiations, he’s already been confirmed.
As of this morning, he hasn’t signed the contract yet. We’ll update the story when he does.
