Melissa Gilbert returns to Little House

By Alexandra Heilbron on September 4, 2009 | 12 Comments

melissa_gilbertFormer child star Melissa Gilbert, now 45, is returning to her Little House on the Prairie roots. She starred as Laura Ingalls in the popular TV series when she was nine to 19, and will now play Caroline “Ma” Ingalls in a musical adaptation that starts next week at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey and will continue on a 34-week, 25-city tour in October, including a stop in Toronto from January 27 to February 28, 2010. Her 13-year-old son Michael will play the role of Willie Oleson, which was played by Gilbert’s brother Jonathan in the TV series. Gilbert recently released a memoir called Prairie Tale, in which she describes the pressures of being a child star and having a pushy stage mom, but also the perks, such as hanging out with Michael Jackson and Johnny Depp.

I didn’t know the boy that played Willie was her brother!

hey tg, me either. I think she looks terrible in this pic, she was quite pretty. I enjoyed little house on the prairie when I was young. Mandee, it is a good family tv show. Very good actually. It is wholesome, and I think if given the chance, young children would still very much enjoy it (as opposed to pokemon or whatever else they are watching). They’ll see little kids playing outside, and respecting their parents..it was a great show.

Her younger sister was the one who played on Roseanne.

I worked with her once as a stand-in. When I shook her hand I noticed: She has really small hands!

Yes, I’ve seen her take much better pictures than this one. She’s looking kind of porky in this shot too. Good actor though and seems to be a nice person as well.

I heard she went through the battle with drugs, alcohol and all that. I didn’t realize that until very recent. She isn’t in the tabloids much, but that is a good thing.

    Porky?
Carol, I didn’t know that! I do know she was adopted, and her adoptive parents really pushed their kids to be famous.
