Men in Black 3 censored in China

Men in Black 3 may be an international box office success but that does not mean it isn’t considered controversial in certain parts of the world. According to multiple web reports and news from The Guardian, Chinese officials cut 13 minutes of the film that were allegedly painting China in a negative light. The deleted scenes included one in which Will Smith erases the memory of a group of Chinese people, and a scene that shows aliens disguising themselves as Chinese restaurant servers. China’s Southern Daily newspaper commented (in reference to the first cut scene), “This could have been a hint on the use of internet censorship to maintain social stability.” This is not the first time that parts of an American film are censored in China — others include the Pirates of the Caribbean, The Karate Kid and even Titanic. ~Stacy Raivich
