Meryl Streep slated to receive major LGBTQ award

Three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep is set to receive yet another award.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Meryl will be honored by the Human Rights Campaign, the United States’ largest LGBTQ civil rights organization. She will be presented with the HRC Ally for Equality Award at a special ceremony in New York City next year, which will mark the first time she’s been recognized for her contributions to LGBTQ advancement and culture.
On-screen, the 19-time Oscar nominee has embodied some of queer cinema’s most notable characters. From Mary Fisher in She-Devil (1989), Madeline Ashton in Death Becomes Her (1992), Miranda Priestley in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Donna in Mamma Mia! (2008), and the Witch in Into the Woods (2014), to real-life figures Karen Silkwood in Silkwood (1983), Julia Child in Julie & Julia (2009) and Florence Foster Jenkins in this year’s hit musical named after the performer, her resumé is wrought with iconic roles that resonate with the LGBTQ community.
When it comes to her efforts off-screen, Meryl is virtually unrivaled. She has been a fervent advocate for gay rights and has spoken at length about the importance of equality, even touching on the subject while accepting a Golden Globe in 2004 for her exceptional work in HBO’s Angels in America. As for her part in the miniseries, she has said it ranks among the most crucial performances of her career for the way it humanizes the AIDS crisis.
Chad Griffin, President of the Human Rights Campaign, addressed the choice to honor Meryl by saying, “Throughout her phenomenal career, Meryl Streep has used her voice to stand up for the LGBTQ community. Whether through her iconic roles that raised the visibility of LGBTQ people, or by boldly speaking out for equality, Meryl Streep embodies the very nature of what it means to be an ally to our community.”
According to the HRC’s website, the Ally for Equality Award “recognizes the outstanding efforts of those who use their voice and publicly stand-up for the LGBTQ community. These individuals dedicate their time, energy, spirit and whole-hearted commitment to better the lives of LGBTQ people. The award is given to allies outside of the LGBTQ community who stand up on behalf of equality for all Americans.”
The ceremony will take place on Feb. 11, 2017 at New York’s Waldorf Astoria.
Before that, though, Meryl will be gunning for her ninth Golden Globe on Jan. 8, 2017. She is nominated for her striking performance in Florence Foster Jenkins. During the show, she will also receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her distinguished body of work.

Meryl Streep is an incredible actress and is great in any role she plays. She deserves
the honor and recognition for all of her work in the movies and for all that she does
for everyone outside of the movie theatre. Thank You Meryl Streep for making movies
that mean something and with no violence or swearing. It gives me hope in the entertainment world that there is still movies worth watching.
