Michael Douglas blames his cancer on stress

By Alexandra Heilbron on September 22, 2010 | 5 Comments

Michael Douglas, who is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with a tumour in his throat, believes the emotional distress he suffered in the last several months is the cause of his illness. The actor, who has overcome alcoholism and drug addiction in the past, said: “This type of cancer can be brought on by alcohol and tobacco abuse… but I look at it as stress. I’ve had a pretty stressful year on a number of fronts, some of which were public and some of which weren’t.” Michael’s son Cameron was sentenced to five years in jail earlier this year after pleading guilty to dealing drugs, and the verdict was devastating for the veteran actor. “My plans are to lick this cancer but it will probably take four or five months. Chemotherapy takes its toll, the more you keep doing it you lose your energy and it gets more difficult to swallow. I’m having a crash course education in just how nasty these cancer cells can be,” Michael admits. Pictured above with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones at the premiere of his new movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, he tries to remain positive, saying, “I’ve always prided myself on putting as much as I possibly can into everything I do and I’m going to beat this.”

Michael, take care of yourself during this difficult time. When you are better I look forward to seeing your next movie! With the love and strength of your wife at your side, I’m positive that you will get better soon. Take care.
(Also there is no reason for people to make comments about smoking – what people require when they are suffering from cancer or any illness is some compassion and caring. It’s called being human. Try to empathize because each of us will be touched by cancer in some way. Reach out to people with your heart not negative energy.)

totally disagree Glynis, (and for the record I have miles of empathy for anyone suffering from any cancer). What I disagree with is that comments about the dangers of smoking CANNOT BE EMPHASIZED ENOUGH, and in particular in view of cancers thought to be directly related in small or large to smoking.

being human, in my view, is attempting to educate the younger crowd of the risks associated with smoking (or any other possible harmful practice) in the hopes that this education will reduce the pain and suffering and even death of those we care about…

reaching out with the truth is always positive…
